Life & Beauty Lessons With Jo Good & Nadine Baggott

We’ve teamed up with Estée Lauder to celebrate its Because Of My Age campaign – which is all about embracing the power of getting older and the achievements that come with it. Part of our partnership is a live podcast between journalist and beauty expert Nadine Baggott and radio broadcaster Jo Good. In it, they discuss everything from self-confidence to skincare that makes a difference and why right now is the most exciting chapter of their lives – here are just a few of the choice snippets, plus how you can listen to the podcast in full…

Created in partnership with ESTÉE LAUDER

On Self-Confidence…

“I like to think the layers that have formed as you age give a confidence to how you approach life. I’m now 69 and I’ve come from various backgrounds – acting, presenting and now I’m doing a bit of influencing. If you chip away, there’s no longer an emptiness, just layers of experience – good or bad – and that, to me, is the joy of ageing.” – Jo

“My confidence has grown over the years, and I think it’s because of all the things that life throws at you. You overcome those things slowly and realise you can’t shy away from the good, the bad and the ugly. You also realise nothing can break you, and that’s so powerful as you get older. I’ve lived for 62 years. I’ve been tested, and I’ve proven I can mess things up and it’s not the end of the game. Life continues, and those ups and downs make you stronger and more confident.” – Nadine

On The ‘Because Of My Age’ Campaign…

“Because of my age, my career has had a second wind and I’m grateful for that. As a journalist, I’ve interviewed so many amazing chemists, founders and artists over the years, and inside my head is a rolodex of information and all of that has to be of use to someone.” – Nadine

The campaign shows women with lines like me. Those lines are what I call the map of my life, but such campaign images were unheard of before. We’ve been told, or certainly made to feel like, we lose our shine as the years go on. But that’s no longer the case, as this campaign is showing. You continue to grow and shine.” – Jo

On The Term ‘Anti-Ageing’…

“Anti-ageing is a skin category, so the phrase is hard to escape. The term came from the French argument of using skincare products to fight ageing. My issue is, we’re obviously not anti the ageing process. Ageing is a privilege. The term is hard to fight, but it’s just wrong to me, as you’re not – and shouldn’t feel as if – you’re fighting the issue.” – Nadine

On Estée Lauder’s Cult Serum…

Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum is one of the first I ever heard of. I remember going to the launch and there was an incredible scientist who sat in front of us, explaining what it did and how it worked. There isn’t a beauty insider I know who can’t say they’ve used it and loved. It’s loaded with humectants to hydrate your skin. It was well ahead of its time and before everyone discovered the benefits of hyaluronic acid.” – Nadine

On Products That Make A Difference…

“I have some non-negotiable daily products. I get up and will always use a rinse-off cleanser first thing, then follow up with an antioxidant serum – one with vitamin C. I finish off in the morning with an SPF and really that’s all you need if you want to follow the basics. I personally now would put a hydrating serum in too for barrier repair, then at night I’d rinse off with a cream or balm cleanser and add in a form of vitamin A – so a retinoid. The latter is the one ingredient proven to reverse signs of sun damage. So, the core three are essential, but everything else you add in between is just an add-on. If you have dry skin, you’ll want some extra hydration and so forth. I would love to see the industry create more formulas – be it in make-up or every step of your skincare – that contain SPF. Daily application of it really is the key way to prevent signs of ageing, and without it the damage can be huge.” – Nadine

On The Menopause…

“Sometimes when I hear someone who’s pre-menopausal talk about ageing, I shut it down – come back to me when you’ve been through it. Women age with hormones. The first time they feel it is perhaps after pregnancy, or it can be when the menopause hits, so skin ages at different times. I now take HRT at a low level and there’s no research to show it can impact your hair and skin, but I’ve noticed it. Oestrogen is the driving force behind keeping your skin plump and young. Sadly, when it’s gone after the menopause, it’s gone. But the good news is you will come to the other side and there are other things to be very grateful for.” – Nadine

“I’m not patronising men, but their lives are quite linear. We, as women, have a new chapter after the menopause, and there is something quite exciting and invigorating about that. I like to think of it as a comma, not a full stop.” – Jo

“If you think of some of the most powerful women in the world, they are reaching their true power and potential when they are older, and that includes energy-wise. Power moments, in my opinion, come post-menopause. One of the things to do is to realise you control your narrative about your own menopause. Knowledge is power, so I recommend getting a good doctor throughout the process and seeing it all as a new chapter. It’s often a powerful time, and a liberating one.” – Nadine
