Product Spotlight: OLAPLEX No.3
What It Is & How It Works…
Founded by Dean Christal, the Olaplex range was created with scientists who built a unique molecule – named bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate – to strengthen the hair from the inside out. Put simply, it works by seeking out any broken bonds in the hair, before linking them back together for a fuller, thicker finish. “Our hair is made up of lots of little bonds, and when we colour it – especially when we use bleach – these bonds are broken down and can cause the hair to become brittle, dry and lacklustre,” explains Shannon Gallacher, senior colourist at Nicola Clarke, John Frieda Salons. “Once elasticity is gone, there isn’t much you can do to revive it, so preventative measures like Olaplex are your best option.” While there are different numbered bottles to choose from – from one to five, and each reflecting a different stage of the haircare process – the third is the most-talked about. “Think of Olaplex No.3 as a mini treatment,” adds stylist Elbie Van Eeden. “It will repair your hair even if you haven’t used number one or two." Expert's all agree that it's a great way to test the Olaplex waters without committing to the whole set. Plus, you’ll see great results on moderate to severely damaged hair.
Why Insiders Swear By It…
It’s not just hairdressers who rate Olaplex. A-listers Chrissy Teigen, Margot Robbie and Kim Kardashian are all huge fans. “It’s so loved because it allows you make the impossible possible,” says Shannon. “It lets you push your hair to the limit, meaning you can achieve colours you wouldn’t ever have thought possible, all with minimal damage and maximum softness. It’s a total game-changer, especially when it comes to regularly using bleach or heated tools.” What’s more, it works for all hair types and textures, reducing fade and maintaining your hair’s integrity. No wonder it continues to be a bestseller.
How To Get The Most From It…
Its benefits go beyond simply strengthening the hair. Olaplex No. 3 can also be used to boost colour and add shine. Haircare pros recommend leaving it on for at least 10 minutes, or overnight if you can and gradually it will re-build any broken follicles, while also enhancing your shade and giving your hair extra gloss that’s visible immediately. In short, the longer it’s left to absorb, the better.
What The Brand Says…
“It doesn’t just protect from any colouring process, Olaplex also prevents further damage,” say brand ambassadors for Olaplex. “In essence, it’s a straight-forward process that re-builds and repairs broken bonds, but it can be used regardless of your colour or styling preferences – for instance, if you simply want to boost your moisture levels." For best results, ask your stylist to use No.3 during a colour treatment in your salon, then afterwards you can follow-up with it at home. The more you use it, the more you’re likely to maintain and see optimum results.
