5 Common Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss affects almost half of us at some point during our lives and can really knock our confidence. To find out the root causes, we spoke to Christopher D’Souza, Expert Hair & Transplant Surgeon, and rounded up the best hair-boosting buys on the market now…

1. Your Genetics Do Play A Part

“The most common cause of hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss). It’s genetic and is estimated that up to 50% of women over the age of 65 suffer from this condition. It can be treated though. Seek out medications that are proven to work such as minoxidil as well as low level light therapy, but it is important to rule out other causes of hair loss before this diagnosis is settled on.”

2. Check Your Iron Levels And Thyroid

“Up to 20% of women suffer from iron deficiency anaemia (low iron), and thyroid disorders can often go undiagnosed. They can both cause hair loss and it is important to get your levels checked. Your GP will be able to do this for you with a simple blood test, and if necessary, you’ll be able to start the appropriate treatment that can help build back growth as advised by them.”

3. Nutrition Plays A Big Part

“Iron, zinc and vitamin D are all absolutely essential when it comes to keeping your hair in tip top condition. A balanced diet should provide everything you need. However, in some cases, supplementation may be beneficial. Again, a simple blood test will reveal if your running low and you’ll then have an idea of how to counteract the effects. Foods to try which are particularly good for your strands include eggs, red meat, shellfish and dark, leafy greens.”

4. Try To Reduce Stress Levels

“Major life events, illness, crash dieting and childbirth are all well recognised causes of hair shedding (telogen effluvium) – it’s a form of temporary hair loss and is usually noticed a few months after the cause. It can be quite dramatic, but don’t worry – the good news is that in the majority of cases your hair will come back, usually 3-4 months after the stressor has passed, so be patient and try not to panic.”

5.Underlying Conditions Can Contribute

“There are a number of conditions that can cause hair loss which often aren’t diagnosed before the symptoms occur. Such as alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) and central centrifugal biopsy which is why it is so important to see someone experienced in treating hair loss. If you’re worried, your GP should always be your first port of call, but it’s also worth seeking an opinion from a dermatologist with a special interest in hair loss, or a hair restoration surgeon.”
