Candice Brathwaite’s work on motherhood and diversity has made her a household name. Her Sunday Times bestselling books – including 2020’s ‘I Am Not Your Baby Mother’ and 2022’s ‘Cuts Both Ways’ – explore themes of gender, class and the complexities of the Black experience. 6am

I wake up at 6am every morning. I have an hour to myself before the kids wake up. The first thing I do is a mental gratitude exercise where I list five things that I'm thankful for. Then, I check the weather. My husband always tries to tell me what’s happened in the news, although I'm rarely interested that early. Taking on that sort of negativity before breakfast is something I try to avoid. If I have the time, I will meditate using the Peloton app.

6.45am

My first coffee of the day is at 6.45am. I’m not ashamed to admit I drink five or six coffees a day. My coffee machine is a Sage and my favourite pods are the purple ones from Nespresso. I’ve recently gotten into matcha – Purple Ted makes the best Nespresso and matcha pods, so I get the best of both worlds. I take my creatine Overload gummies and have a couple of sips of my protein shake. From 7am, I am getting my youngest, RJ, ready for school, while my oldest Esme gets herself ready. I will have Cleo Sol on in the background – all of her songs are so calming. Everyone’s out the door by 8.30am at the latest.

8.30am

A shower before the gym is non-negotiable.  My husband thinks it’s strange but it’s just my thing. I use the Sol De Janeiro Delicia Drench Shower Oil and the body butter when I get out. My morning skincare routine consists of The Inkey List’s Listeric Acid and Acnecide’s 5% Gel Benzoyl Peroxide to help reduce breakouts and dark marks, as well as Medik8’s Hydr8 B5 and some La Roche-Posay sunscreen.

9.15am

I work out six times a week. I have to get it out of the way in the morning. I always work out on an empty stomach. My gym is a 10-minute drive from my house, so on the way I’ll listen to some of my favourite podcasts, HCPod – I know they're not talking to me or about me, but I thoroughly enjoy the banter. My husband also got me into What Now? with Trevor Noah. I love Oner Active with all my heart. The fact they are female-founded and the marketing features women who look strong not skinny really speaks to me. My trainers are typically On or Stella McCartney for adidas. I take a bottle of liquid IV to the gym, and I always have my Beats speaker to hand. I love my PT, but he likes drum and bass and that’s not my vibe.

10.15am

I am the only one in my house who walks our dog. Brixton, our long haired chihuahua, doesn’t need more than 45 minutes max. Once I'm back, I head into our home office. Bodé will already have been working for a few hours so when I come in, we get straight to it. He will recite emails to me, we will go through any kind of concept changes that a brand is looking for in a piece of branded content, and we will speak to various agents over at WME. We have a double desk set-up and our stations couldn’t look more different. I have lots of scented candles, crystals and incense, whereas his is very tidy with various bills and invoices on it. I am addicted to Smythson notebooks, I have no less than six on the go at any one time.

1pm

Right now, I am working on my first piece of adult fiction. We are working on the logistics of a North American and Canadian book tour for Manifesto. My first meal of the day is around 1pm. Itsu sushi is my go-to or maybe three protein bagels with jam and peanut butter with another coffee or matcha. This is followed up by a lemon flapjack Trek protein bar – I am obsessed with them. I eat standing up by the island in our kitchen; for some reason I struggle to ever sit down and eat. When I have a lunch meeting in town, my favourite spots are Lavo at The BoTree Hotel and Harry’s in Knightsbridge.

2.30pm

It’s shower time again. Mainly because I have to start getting ready for an evening work event.  We live in Milton Keynes, so I have to be ready by 4.30pm to get there on time. I will cleanse using Caroline Hiron's Skin Rocks, then I rehydrate with hyaluronic acid and Clinique's Moisture Surge. My make-up never changes. I start with the Charlotte Tilbury setting spray, UOMA Beauty’s foundation and concealer, the Benefit Goof Proof brow pencil and a M·A·C eyebrow gel. After that it’s the Huda Beauty setting powder, Fenty Beauty eyeshadow and Sephora's own brand mascara. My blusher is from Beauty Pie, I like the Fenty contour stick and M·A·C’s ‘Night Moss’ lipliner with Trish McEvoy's Liquid Lip Colour Matte in red. I always finish off with the ONE/SIZE setting spray.

4.30pm

My outfit is usually planned – and it often depends on whether I’m getting a car or train into London. I always work backwards from what coat I want to wear. If it’s a loud coat, then I wear jeans and Converse. With a simpler coat, I’ll throw on some YSL slingbacks or Amina Muaddi heels. My favourite coats are from Shrimps, Saks Potts an d Balenciaga. If money was no object, I’d say Prada was one of my favourite brands. If I'm going out, I love the structure of Alexander McQueen – think very 80s shoulders and a nipped-in waist. On the high street, you can’t beat Marks & Spencer right now. It’s done well to keep up with trends and it understands that most people are on a budget. I am very into novelty bags – they’re a great conversation starter at events. My taxi bag by Brandon Blackwood or my JW Anderson pigeon bag are favourites. My style icons are Carrie Bradshaw and Cynthia Erivo.

8pm

I have a hard stop at 8pm at home. I’ll have done dinner, homework and bathtime with the kids and wrapped up my emails. I’ll treat myself to a luxury bath, and light my favourite Jo Malone London candle in Bitter Orange. I don’t really watch TV; I'm always going to choose YouTube over Netflix. RJ and I often have ‘mummy and me’ time in my bed watching our favourite vlogs.

11.30pm

It’s a bit like Cinderella over here – no matter what, I have to be home before midnight. It tricks me into thinking I'm going to get a decent night's sleep. My nighttime skincare routine is pretty serious. I start by double cleansing, followed by The Inkey List’s Salicylic Acid and the Dr. Dennis Gross Pill Pads in the Universal Strength. I then use my red light mask by MZ Skin. After that, I apply the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum and eye cream, then lock it all in with Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream. Lastly, I like to apply some Aesop hand cream. On my bedside table, I have a glass of water, my phone and my Apple watch charger – plus, my reading glasses, retainer case and Smythson notebook and pen. The last thing I do before bed is listen to celebrities reading bedtime stories on the Calm a pp, it’s very soothing.
