The Interiors Revival You Need To Know About
Why are fitted carpets enjoying a revival?
“Wall-to-wall carpet allows for pattern, colour and texture all in one room. As floor layouts move away from open plan, more of us are revisiting the idea of creating separate rooms, including living rooms, offices and dining rooms – and all these different spaces will accommodate carpet.” – Claire Kimble, head of design at Crucial Trading
“Few things make a home feel warm and cosy quite like a carpet. We all have different tastes, but with carpet, it doesn’t matter which design you choose – it will instantly add warmth by being more comfortable than other flooring options. Plus, more people are considering the environment when it comes to their home – it’s at the forefront of everyone’s minds. How we connect to the natural world continues to be topical – and all of our carpets are made from wool which is completely sustainable. We’ve even recently introduced collections that are woven from 100% undyed British wool.” – Lisa Conway, head of marketing at Brintons
Should fitted carpets only be used in certain rooms?
“Carpet is a great way to create a cohesive flow throughout your home and this can be done by choosing the same colour or pattern. Kitchens and bathrooms are not usually areas that are carpeted, but these spaces can be softened by adding a rug.” – Lisa
“I love a fitted carpet in a bedroom. With such a strong focus on sleep, broadloom carpets are a natural fit, as they create warmth, balance and that texture underfoot from the natural fibres is so comforting and restorative.” – Claire
In your opinion, what’s the best material to use for fitted carpets?
“Wool is a fantastic fibre. It’s easy to clean, naturally fire retardant, hypoallergenic and soft underfoot. It also acts as a natural insulator to keep your home warm. If it’s looked after correctly, a wool carpet will last for years. Shearing is essential for the welfare of the sheep and their wool is 100% natural – plus, it’s easily recyclable, which makes wool the ultimate sustainable choice. Wool carpets will also generally hide dirt better than synthetic products – a quick vacuum is all you need to do to keep them clean.” – Lisa
What type of carpet is best for adding texture to a space?
“By using cut and loop technology, we can produce different heights during the weaving process and the result is often a structural, three-dimensional pattern which delivers subtle texture and dimension feel. The carpets are also created using 100% undyed British wool, which further adds to their beauty – plus, they’re more sustainable.” – Lisa
Patterned carpets are making a comeback – why is that?
“We see pattern becoming a backdrop to everyday living as more fun slowly returns to our lives in general. Simple pattern and scale – always working with the seasons and light – can add a calm, contemporary viewpoint to an interior, while bold pattern lends itself better to areas such as hallways, perhaps as a stair runner, or in a room as a rug. Ultimately, it depends how brave you’re feeling and what else is going on in the room.” – Claire
“It’s all about personal taste and style and there are no rules when it comes to expressing your personality. If you’re a fan of maximalism, then go all out, break the rules and mix and match colours with clashing patterns. Alternatively, if that’s not your style, then bolder statement patterns lend themselves well to the hall, stairs and landing, where you can go bolder and brighter without having to consider matching furniture and accessories.” – Lisa
Will neutral carpets ever go out of fashion then?
“Not in my opinion. A neutral palette is a great way to create a calm and cohesive look, and it can be used throughout the home. It’s a great investment as it makes it easy to co-ordinate furniture and soft furnishings, while pops of colour can be added through a statement cushion or throw.” – Lisa
Finally, can you still layer a rug over a carpet?
“I’d like to see more rugs layered over carpets, especially in the winter. Instead of wood or stone, you have a beautiful wool carpet as a backdrop to your rug, which together give textural interest and a sense of composition to the space.” – Claire
“Rugs are a great way to zone a room, so there’s no reason why you can’t layer a rug on top of a carpet. If you have a plain carpet, adding a colourful rug is a perfect way to experiment (without the commitment) with bolder patterns and colour choices.” – Lisa
