How To Find The Right Kitchen Bar Stools

How many? How high? How durable? There are lots of factors that go into choosing kitchen bar stools. To help you find the right ones, we asked two top designers to share their dos and don’ts.

DO consider the style and height. High backs offer plenty of support but can look cumbersome and bulky in a small space. While backless stools don’t come with any support, they can be pushed underneath an island or counter top when they’re not being used, which means they can look stylish without cluttering up a space. – Beth Dadswell, Imperfect Interiors

DON’T confuse bar stools with counter stools. The number of times you walk into a home and see bar stools sitting at a standard 90cm-high kitchen worktop, leaving no space whatsoever for people to tuck their legs under. What people don’t realise is the item most of us need in our homes is actually called a counter stool. The average height for a counter stool is 67cm, whereas a bar stool often reaches up to 82cm. – Irene Gunter, Gunter & Co

DO be realistic about how often you'll use them. Most models aren't very comfortable. However, if you end up doing work on your laptop or helping the children with their homework, comfort can suddenly be an important factor. A small back rest can look stylish and offer great support, while an upholstered seat can make all the difference. – Irene

DON’T be tempted to cram too many seats in. Remember, you need to allow for enough elbow room to get in and out without asking your neighbour to shuffle up. The ergonomics are just as important as the look. – Beth

DO go for a minimum of two and a maximum of four. It's ideal if they can sit around the corner of an island so the space still feels sociable. Having more than four tends to be overkill – if you have enough space for six bar stools, you probably have room for a dining table. – Irene

DON’T forget to be practical. Upholstered fabric stools are comfortable and can add a more luxurious element. But unless the fabric is wipeable, they won’t wear as well. Wooden stools aren’t comfortable for long periods of time, so rattan or wicker might be a better option if you like the natural look. Plus, they’re easier to clean. – Beth
