The Micro Trend: Gloves

The History
Gloves have always held a certain allure – once a marker of nobility, they later became a calling card for Hollywood icons like Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Since then, they’ve never strayed too far from fashion’s orbit, cropping up in different guises over the decades. Madonna made them rebellious in the 80s, Prada gave them an avant-garde twist in the noughties and now, it’s less about nostalgia, more about adding a bit of edge to your everyday looks.
The Runway Revival
A comeback had been simmering for a few seasons already – AW24 saw houses like Max Mara and Michael Kors add gloves into their ready-to-wear collections, often paired with chic coats and knitwear. Then came the SS26 shows: Pierpaolo Piccioli’s debut at Balenciaga leaned into high drama, with models in long gloves layered over sharp coats and evening dresses. Anne Hathaway even showed up on the front row sporting a pair – styled unexpectedly with a graphic tee, it offered a different perspective on how to wear them. Elsewhere, Givenchy went for a sculptural, monochrome take, Rowen Rose leaned into glossy crimson and Brunello Cucinelli opted for muted tones in layered knits. It’s little wonder fashion insiders are hooked.
The Current Trend
There isn’t just one way to do gloves. Minimalists should take cues from Balenciaga and Givenchy – slim, black styles paired with monochrome tailoring feel sharp, modern and unfussy. Colour fans can look to Stella McCartney and Balmain, where pastel pinks and fiery reds made gloves the star of the show, while brands like De Savary London are proving they’re not just for couture customers. Elsewhere, influencers like @YanaMotina, @Jacqueline.GJK, @TheFashionGuitar, @KiraAtikova and @AlisonToby are showing how to wear them in real life – think tonal cream-on-cream, glossy black against oversized coats or layered neutrals that feel instantly more directional.
