Primetime Emmy Awards 2018 Best Dressed

Hollywood’s biggest accolades aren’t just reserved for movie stars; small screen actors were out in force last night for the 70th Emmy television awards. From Jessica Biel to Thandie Newton, big names took to the red carpet thanks to star turns in series for Netflix, Sky and Amazon, plus heroes from TV favourites like The Crown, Stranger Things and Game Of Thrones all took home statues. But it’s not only who won on our lips – here are the dresses we can’t get enough of…

Who: Rachel Brosnahan

Wearing: Oscar De La Renta

Why we love it: Bright red never fails to make an impact on the red carpet and combined with this Grecian style is surprisingly soft and romantic.

Who: Vanessa Kirby

Wearing: Tom Ford

Why we love it: Sometimes less is more, and this form-fitting pale pink dress with silky bralette detail is the perfect sexy-subtle hybrid.

British stars scored big on the night; The Crown’s Claire Foy won Leading Actress in a Drama Series, Thandie Newton scored Best Supporting Actress for her role in Westworld and Matthew Rhys nabbed Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Americans.

Who: Thandie Newton

Wearing: Brandon Maxwell

Why we love it: The colour, the asymmetry, the dramatic scarf detail – this design combines high-octane drama and red-carpet elegance perfectly.

Who: Samira Wiley

Wearing: Jenny Packham

Why we love it: This embellished Jenny Packham number is a classic events winner, with a plunging neckline keeping things up to date. Add a glam beauty look and statement earrings for a vampy finish.

Who: Claire Foy

Wearing: Calvin Klein by Appointment

Why we love it: Red carpet dressing doesn’t have to be all sweeping gowns and sequined detail – we love The Crown’s Claire Foy in this simple column style. The giant bow adornment adds just enough interest.

It wasn’t just the dresses that got people talking – Best Director for a Special winner Glenn Weiss popped the question to his long-term girlfriend live on stage after collection his gong. Thankfully she said yes.

Who: Kristen Bell

Wearing: Solace London

Why we love it: Pared back, slick and un-fussy, this white form-fitting dress with its square neckline is a fresh approach to award season style.

Who: Jessica Biel

Wearing: Ralph & Russo

Why we love it: Every red carpet needs a bit of conventional drama, and Jessica Biel in this Ralph & Russo style ticks all the boxes. Asymmetric detail and a pearlesque finish keep the look modern.

Diversity was a hot topic this year; Sandra Oh was the first Asian woman to be nominated for a Best Actress award, whilst a star line up of Saturday Night Live actors alongside Ru Paul, John Legend and Kristen Bell poked fun at Hollywood’s diversity issues with a singalong opening number.

Who: Letitia Wright

Wearing: Pamella Roland

Why we love it: Gold sequinning, tulle tiers, semi-sheer panelling – this vintage-inspired midi dress combines all the tropes of glamorous eveningwear, whilst remaining surprisingly elegant.

Who: Sandra Oh

Wearing: Ralph & Russo

Why we love it: This red velvet design may not be what we associate with glamour-mavens Ralph & Russo, but with its plunging neckline, embellished detail and mesh pattern add all the necessary drama.
