Harley Viera-Newton’s Little Black Book
If I could only shop on one street, it would be Takeshita Street in Tokyo. It’s a tiny lane packed with little shops and stalls, full of brightly coloured jewellery, socks, and other accessories.
The coolest piece I’ve ever found on my travels is a really special pair of vintage Pucci kitten heels at a consignment boutique called Dina C’s. It was while I was working in Palm Beach, Florida.
The coolest boutique in the world is Restir Tokyo. The interior and exterior design is incredible, and I love all the brands they carry. I found my favourite pair of Simone Rocha earrings there.
The best destination for independent stores is Marylebone High Street in London. I love strolling down and visiting MATCHES, The Conran Shop, Daunt Books, and Rococo Chocolates.
The best department store in the world is Liberty London – I love it so much. Its home floor is my favourite anywhere in the world and their assortment of new designers is always amazing. I also love Loft in Tokyo for unique stationary and hard-to-find beauty products.
The most unexpected destination for great fashion is Etsy. I’ve found so many treasures on there during late night searches! There’s lots of vintage on there – you just have to be very specific with your criteria and be patient. I’ve recently had my eye on some great quilted jackets...
The coolest under-the-radar brand is Gelber & Sons. They make beautiful custom guitars and basses in all sorts of colours, prints, and glitters, but they also sell stylish baseball caps that sell out immediately. I love wearing mine on hikes.
My perfect shopping day would include window shopping at Chanel in Paris with a warm pain au chocolat, followed by a day of discovering all the new vintage shops in Le Marais.
The best brand for footwear is Ancient Greek Sandals. I’ve just launched a collection collaboration with them, which I’m so excited about. There are so many playful styles in the range – my favourites are the Iaso Heart sandals because they’re so comfortable – plus, they look good with everything from jeans to dresses.
The best brand for basics is Petit Bateau & Hanro. They make lovely classic tank tops to tuck into jeans and skirts.
I never walk away empty handed from Aralda Vintage in Los Angeles. The owner, Brynn, has amazing taste and curates really special designer pieces. I recently picked up a fish tank Moschino purse in there.
The best vintage store in the world is C Madeleine’s in Miami. It’s huge and organised by designer and era. They are currently relocating, and I can’t wait for them to open again. I could spend an entire day in there.
My favourite vintage piece I’ve ever bought is a Chanel skirt suit I wore to my wedding – it’s white and beaded and I found at C Madeleine’s by complete chance.
For repairs and alterations, I go to Bob’s Cleaners, my neighbourhood tailor in Los Feliz, Los Angeles. At this point, he’s definitely used to me dropping off a mountain of dresses each week.
If I could only wear one brand again, it would be HVN. It might seem predictable, seeing as it’s my own brand, but I live in the dresses I design – the silhouettes are classic and timeless, yet the prints are playful. They’re also easy to dress up or down, which makes them ideal for traveling, too.
The best sustainable brand is Patagonia. Everyone needs one of their fleeces. They have become my go-to layer for travel, hiking and casual wear.
For something really special, I shop at the Manhattan Vintage Show and Pickwick Vintage in LA. They always have a great selection of pieces from the 40s, which is my favourite fashion era.
The best fashion gift I’ve ever given is a Loewe mermaid print yoga mat, which I gave to my mother for her birthday. I still regret parting with it…
The best fashion gift I’ve ever received is an impossible to find vintage Diana Ross shirt from my husband… that was a great present.
