Oppenheimer Won Big

It was a good night for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the biopic of atomic bomb creator J. Robert Oppenheimer. As well as taking the top prize – best drama film – Nolan took home best director and stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr won best actor and best supporting actor respectively. The film also took home the gong for best score. Last summer was all about ‘Barbenheimer’ – the Box Office event that saw Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie go head-to-head at the cinema. Last night, the Golden Globes seemingly settled the debate: Barbie lost out on acting and directing wins, but did take home the newly created box office achievement award, while Billie Eilish won best song for ‘What Was I Made For’. Accepting the former, Barbie lead Margot Robbie said: “We would like to dedicate this to every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth – the movie theatres.”

Elsewhere, gripping French thriller Anatomy of a Fall won two awards – best screenplay and best picture, non-English language. There was also proof that there are still great things to arrive at UK cinemas this month. Both Poor Things and The Holdovers are set for a silver screen release in January – both won two awards each. The newest film from the director behind The Favourite and The Lobster, Poor Things won best picture, comedy or musical and best performance by an actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy for Emma Stone; and boarding school comedy The Holdovers won best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy for Paul Giamatti and best supporting actress, motion picture for Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

There Was A Historic Win

The nominees and winners of the Golden Globes are voted for by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a group of international journalists based in California. However, a 2021 investigation by the LA Times found HFPA had no Black members. This led to 2022’s ceremony being cancelled after stars boycotted it in protest. This year, a celebration of diversity was in evidence, with Robert Downey Jr, upon accepting his best supporting actor award, telling the voting body: "Thanks for changing your game”.

Elsewhere, Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone became the first indigenous person to win the best actress award. She began her acceptance speech by speaking Blackfoot, the language of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana. "I just spoke a bit of Blackfeet language, the beautiful community nation that raised me, encouraged me to keep doing this," she told viewers, continuing: “This award is a historic one. I'm so grateful I can speak even a little bit of my language, because in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English, and then their sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera.”

Some Of Our Favourite Shows Won Awards

If you listen to or watch the SheerLuxe podcast, you’ll know we watch a lot of TV – so we were pleased to see that plenty of the series we’ve enjoyed most over the last year pick up awards. After an incredible final fourth series, Succession swept the board when it came to TV wins – winning best television series, drama; and best performance by an actress in a television series, drama for Sarah Snook. Once again, three Roys were nominated for best performance by an actor in a television series, drama, but we were pleased to see Kieran Culkin take the win this year (both Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox have won in previous years). Matthew MacFadyen also took home the award for best supporting actor, television, for his turn as the slippery Tom Wambsgans.

Kitchen comedy-drama The Bear won big for a second year in a row. The Disney+ series won acting awards for both Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, as well as best television series, musical or comedy. We were also pleased to see Netflix’s Beef do well. The gripping mini-series took home best limited series, anthology series or a motion picture made for television, plus acting awards for its two stars, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong.

Read On For SL’s Best Dressed

Who: Carey Mulligan

Wearing: Vintage Schiaparelli

Why We Love It: Simple but still with the ‘wow’ factor, Carey Mulligan had one of the night’s stand out looks. While it wasn't one of the boldest or brightest styles, the gown’s expertly crafted corset, glitzy details and fishtail skirt brought the drama.

MATT BARON/BEI/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Greta Lee

Wearing: Loewe

Why We Love It: The Past Lives and The Morning Show actress has been nothing short of a style muse over the past year. Impressing us time and again with fashion-forward, exciting gowns, her Loewe look at the Globes did not disappoint. While minimal front on, the back revealed a more intricate structure and details. Paired with glam hair and make-up, she’s a star we can’t wait to see more from this awards season.

ALLISON DINNER/EPA-EFE/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Hunter Schafer

Wearing: Prada

Why We Love It: Feminine, fresh and with a cool, on-trend feel – this was the perfect look for Hunter Schaffer. Paired with a simple pointed toe heel and minimal accessories, the dress – and the actress herself of course – were the stars of the show.

MATT BARON/BEI/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Jennifer Lopez

Wearing: Nicole + Felicia Couture

Why We Love It: If anyone was going to bring some serious glamour, drama and colour to the red carpet, it was going to be J-Lo. A simple bodice was contrasted with exaggerated sleeves and an elegant train – in a striking pink shade. The star was styled with an old-Hollywood blowout to tie the look together.

ALLISON DINNER/EPA-EFE/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Ayo Edebiri

Wearing: Prada

Why We Love It: The Bear actress and winner of the best television actress award was one of a handful of stars sporting this season’s key accessory – a cool bob. Paired with a sophisticated, strapless red gown, a silk and chiffon train brought Golden Globes-level drama to the look.

DAVID FISHER/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Elle Fanning

Wearing: Vintage Balmain

Why We Love It: We love the classic, full-skirted silhouette of Elle Fanning’s ivory silk dress which was pulled from Balmain's archive. Adorned with a beautiful bow on the bustier, she pulled her hair back into a sleek low bun and finished the look with Cartier jewellery, which included a large diamond necklace and wing-shaped diamond earrings.

C FLANIGAN/IMAGESPACE/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Natalie Portman

Wearing: Dior Couture

Why We Love It: Natalie Portman’s Dior dress was like an Impressionist work of art. Tiny multi-coloured star-shaped crystals were strategically placed to create the illusion of a meadow, graduating to a simple white and silver embellished bodice. Her stylist, Ryan Hastings, paired the scoop-neck gown with Jimmy Choo shoes and silver teardrop earrings from De Beers.

CHRIS CHEW/UPI/SHUTTERSTOCK

Who: Margot Robbie

Wearing: Armani Privé

Why we love it: True to character, Margot Robbie stunned in a custom-made Barbie-pink sequinned dress by Armani Privé. Accessorising with a pink tulle polka-dot boa around her arms – from Armani Privé’s autumn/winter 2022 couture collection – she finished the look with a matching hot-pink clutch, pointy-toe heels and oversized diamond studs.
