Everything I Love Right Now: Lucy Alston

London-based art director and creative consultant Lucy Alston’s personal style revolves around neutrals and tailoring – plus, she’s a master at mixing lesser-known brands, high-street finds and designer pieces. From fashion to food, travel to culture, here’s everything she’s loving right now…

FASHION

If I had to pick a favourite designer, it would be Saint Laurent – from the 1960s when Yves Saint Laurent started the brand right through to now under the creative direction of Anthony Vaccarello. I also love the quiet luxury created by the Olsen twins over at The Row and the effortless Parisian mood at Lemaire

The under-the-radar brand everyone should know is Australian brand Esse Studios. I also love the ethos behind New-York based Maria McManus – buy fewer harmful pieces and wear them more often. Le Brand, from Warsaw, creates minimalist yet still feminine pieces, and Ukrainian brand Bevza is doing really great things.

I don’t really buy into trends. As a stylist, however, it is important to get a feel for what’s out there and how to make them work or how they make me feel when I wear them. Right now, there’s a trend to wear timeless, simple pieces – clothes you feel at ease in, and that fit seamlessly into your wardrobe. One other thing I might try to embrace this season is print, but not in a trend-led way.

My go-to brand for wardrobe staples is COS. It’s really upped its game recently and has so many amazing pieces. I also love Filippa K, Caes, Deiji and St Agni. The latter two are great for summer staples. Also Ziah has some of the most beautiful swimwear.

I love shopping on Mount St. for inspiration – then I’ll look for vintage finds online. I can’t resist a trip to the The Frankie Shop though – I live in its tailoring and outerwear.

I find a lot of second-hand gems on Oxfam online, the SVC shop vintage collection, The Level and eBay. I enjoy scrolling through 1st Dibs and The Real Real too.

TRAVEL

The ideal city break is always New York. It’s years since I’ve been and I’d love to go back. Tokyo is incredible too – the people, the food, the architecture.

The next holiday I’m taking is to the south of France. I’m hoping to visit my family who live right on the doorstep of the Camargue, a few miles from Nîmes. I spent the summer holidays there as a child and love it so much. My aunt is the best cook and my favourite thing to do is hang out by the pool, then get ready for l’apéro and watch the sunset drinking un bon Rosé français – usually one my uncle has picked up from the local vineyard.

INSTAGRAM

For style inspiration, I follow @ChristieTyler and @TyLynnNguyen. Christie has the most beautiful style and eye for detail – she’s a joy to follow and be friends with in real life. TyLynn is chic, beautiful and very graceful; she creates content with real substance.

The interior account everyone should know about is my sister @EmilyForgot. I also really love @BétonBrutLondon, @The.Peanut.Vendor and my friend @LePetitFika

For a bit of wanderlust, it doesn’t get better than @ChristiesInc. I always end up down a rabbit hole on that account and I really want to attend one of its high-profile auctions – I think it would be so interesting.

If you need a bit of glamour in your life, follow @EndlesslyLoveClub or @StyleHeroine. Evangelie is glam in a very haute way and really creative – she’s now the artistic director of Sergio Rossi. If you love amazing shoes, she’s your girl.

FOOD & DRINK

My breakfast of choice is always a nutty granola or a classic pain au chocolat.

My favourite thing to cook is pasta. I usually keep it really simple – I love linguine dressed in olive oil, garlic, parsley, a squeeze of lemon, a hint of fresh chilli and a good scattering of pecorino or parmesan and lots of black pepper. I love Stanley Tucci’s TV series, Searching For Italy, and really want to try his courgette and pasta recipe. It looks so delicious.

My go-to cocktail is a classic margarita. If they’re made with a very good tequila or mezcal then I’m happy to drink them anywhere. I’ve yet to try the smoked salt one – it’s on my list. I’m also quite partial to a Soho House speciality, Picante de la Casa. I have my friend Catarina Mira to thank for that.

There are so many good restaurants out there, but I recently ate at Old Sessions House and it was delicious. Also Native at Browns is wonderful – sustainable and conscious food done in a really innovative and modern way. Afterwards, you can go for a wander around Browns, which if you’ve had a few too many drinks, might be a little dangerous…

CULTURE

When it comes to an app I couldn’t live without, it would probably be Google Maps. I know that’s really boring but it’s true – and Instagram obviously.

The last exhibition I went to was Charlotte Perriand at the Design Museum. Exhibitions are the one thing I say I need to do more of and never do. Growing up I was always in a gallery with my father – I feel so lucky to have grown up surrounded by so much art and culture.

The series I’ve most recently binged is Sex & The City. After more than 15 years, I decided to re-watch all of it, and it was such a joy. And Ozark – that series is so good.

Film wise, it could be any British romcom from the late 90s – they make me so happy. If it’s got Hugh Grant in it, even better.
