Accessories: Tissa Fontaneda

The Story

Tissa Fontaneda is one of the most-revered, but under-the-radar designers in the world of luxury accessories. Having worked as head of product at Loewe before launching her eponymous brand ten years ago, her designs are a culmination of childhood experiences from different European countries: “After growing up in Munich, I spent time in Italy before moving to Paris and learning about the fashion business there,”explains Tissa. “I then went on to Spain and experienced the quality of outstanding leather, recognising luxury can't be separated from traditional, European craftsmanship. Good taste and excellent quality are at the heart of what Tissa Fontaneda stands for,” she adds.

The Style

Tissa Fontaneda believes luxury is grounded in quality, not just a name, so while all pieces have a modern feel, you can be sure they’re all made to last. Signature 'bubbled' leather is present throughout the collections, which give the bags a contemporary look, while classic silhouettes ensure they don’t feel too trend-led. “The Uptown Sack and Simple Matter are our classics season after season,” says Tissa. “While our Tango – which Claire Danes wore in the season eight finale of Homeland – is our best-selling evening bag.” She adds.

What’s Different?

Tissa’s signature 'bubbled' effect leather is instantly recognisable, and a technique she says you won’t find anywhere else: “Our Nappa Bubble bag is completely unique to the brand – the texture of the leather can only be achieved through a lengthy and complex steaming process where each section is individually handcrafted by skilled artisans. The meticulous nature of this process makes it nearly impossible to copy."

What’s next?

After relying on digital sales throughout lockdown, the brand is now bringing the Tissa Fontaneda world to life with a physical space in London. “We opened the boutique last year just as the pandemic was starting to hit, so we’re excited to really introduce the brand to local customers after being shut for nearly a year,” says Tissa. The store is located on 39 Marylebone Lane and relaunches this week in line with Covid-19 regulations.

@NACKIYE

CLOTHES: Nackiyé

The Story

Founded by sisters Başak and Defne Kocabıyıkoğlu, Nackiyé (a Turkish word taken from their great grandmother’s name) was inspired by the pair’s childhood spent in rural fishing towns in the Eastern Mediterranean. Aiming to encapsulate the way summer transformed their hometown, the sisters have launched a collection of ready-to-wear pieces, all of which exude the relaxed glamour of the place they grew up in.

The Style

The Nackiyé aesthetic is heavily inspired by artisanal craft and voluminous silhouettes, so expect billowy dresses, tops and skirts with ruffles and featuring playful prints. While the brand describes itself as “for the modern-day globetrotting woman” the majority of Nackiyé’s collections are wearable enough for both holidays and for city life.

What’s different?

If you’re looking to make a statement, Nackiyé’s maximal details are not to be missed. Wide sleeves, jaw-skimming necklines and exaggerated silhouettes feature heavily, while carefully selected, high-quality fabrics ensure style is always backed up by substance. “Inspired prints, delicate embroideries and vibrant colours perfectly sync with the spirit of the idyllic destinations,” explain the brand’s founders.

What’s next?

Nackiyé has recently dropped its Resort 21 collection, which has plenty of pieces ideal for balmy summer evenings. The brand is keeping tight lipped about what’s to come next, but follow their Instagram for regular behind the scenes updates.

@SHYLA.LONDON

Jewellery: Shyla London

The Story

“Shyla was born out of my interest in my mother’s vintage jewellery,” says founder of Shyla London, Alice Blofeld. “Plus, I often struggled to find classic pieces that still felt modern and contemporary, as well as the kind of quality that didn’t cost the earth,” she adds. “In a nutshell, Shyla was created to provide high-quality, timeless pieces with contemporary appeal at an affordable price point.”

The Style

Classic design with a contemporary twist is what anchors each one of Shyla’s pieces. “Our objective is to create timeless jewellery instead of trend-led designs which you might easily get rid of.” The result is statement cocktail rings, chunky gold embellished with pearls and the brand’s signature coloured glass. “We have a lot of bestsellers,” says Alice. “The Ettienne Earrings, our chunky Glass Hoops, all the Claw rings and the Ettienne necklaces are some of our most-loved pieces.”

What’s different?

Shyla’s designs might look high-end, but they’re surprisingly affordable – pieces range from £45-£78. “A lot of our styles are quite different from what you currently see both in high fashion and on the high street,” says Alice. “For example, all our glass jewellery is handmade and not something you see done anywhere else.” The brand also champions ethical and sustainable practices in its manufacturing: “We are a women-led team at Shyla London, and believe strongly in the idea of sisterhood and supporting other women,” continues Alice. “We work with several small charities, too, which educate some of the poorest women in India. Plus, we use recycled gold and silver in our designs and all our packaging is recycled.”

What’s next

Having recently launched at Liberty, Shyla is going from strength to strength, with plenty of new designs in the works. “We’re currently working on a new hoop collection, as I wear hoops every day and therefore know how hard it can be to find the perfect one,” says Alice. “The collection will include large and small hoops, chunky and thin, colours and solid – keep your eyes peeled for lots of new earrings!”
