Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Announce Pregnancy
A statement released this morning from Kensington Palace said: “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019. Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”
The Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles, Prince William and Kate Middleton are all said to be “delighted” for the couple – as is Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, who said she is “very happy about this lovely news” and “looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild.”
Both Harry and Meghan have been vocal about their desire to have children in the past. The Duchess once described being a mother as something on her “bucket list”, whilst in 2015 Harry said: “Of course I would love to have kids right now but there's a process that one has to go through and tours like this are great fun. Hopefully I'm doing all right by myself. It would be great to have someone else next to me to share the pressure, but you know, time will come and whatever happens, happens.”
The subject of children has been a regular fixture when it comes to the pair – on a trip to Belfast two months before they got married, the Duchess was shown a range of innovative baby products, to which she said, “I’m sure at some point we’ll need the whole [lot].”
It also came up in the couple’s engagement interview, where Prince Harry said: “You know, I think one step at a time, and hopefully we’ll start a family in the near future.”
But perhaps they’ll stick to just the one child for now – in July, Harry was asked again by a fan if he and Meghan plan on starting a family. “My husband also has red hair and he gave me five children — when are you and Meghan going to get going?” Elaine Adam-Stewart reportedly asked Prince Harry, who told People of Prince Harry's response: “He laughed and said ‘Five children? — too many.’”
The announcement comes as their pair begin their first official foreign tour together in Australia. Meghan is said to be past the 12-week mark in her pregnancy, but already had people speculating over the weekend as to whether she was withchild. During the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, the Duchess didn’t remove her Givenchy coat, and suspicions were raised even further after the pair’s Australian tour schedule indicated Meghan would not be climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Meghan and Harry’s children will be given the title of Lord or Lady, taking the surname Mountbatten-Windsor – Prince Philip’s family name.
Meghan and Harry are said to have first met in July 2016 after being set up by a mutual friend. The pair announced their engagement in November 2017 and wed in Windsor in May 2018. While the exact month has not been announced yet, we can expect to welcome the little one in spring next year. We’ll see you at the Lindo wing…
