Show Your Scalp Some TLC

Things started to change the minute I thought about my haircare regime like my skincare routine – which meant incorporating an exfoliator, or in this case a scalp scrub, every couple of weeks. Similar to their facial counterparts, they help get rid of dead skin cells, remove excess product build up, boost circulation and generally freshen things up. There are a few I rate but I recently tried stylist Adam Reed’s The Crown Scalp Scrub from his newly launched range Arkive Headcare. As well as doing a brilliant job, the menthol scent (and accompanying tingle) really helps to wake you up in morning.

Be More Targeted With Your Products

I used to grab whatever shampoo and conditioner I had to hand, but I’ve since learnt that being a bit more specific pays off. My hair is coloured and prone to dryness, so it needs all the hydration it can get. I’ve talked about Frederic Fekkai’s Brilliant Gloss Duo before, but I’m now also hooked on L’Oréal’s new Hydra Moisture Locking Shampoo and Conditioner. It uses the brand’s skincare knowledge to harness the mega-moisturising abilities of hyaluronic acid and it’s been a real game-changer for my brittle ends.

Make Time For A Mask

I love a good leave-in treatment that can be left on all day or all night; I personally find them easier than masks you leave on for just five minutes. Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector is, frankly, a miracle worker at making my hair feel stronger and more supple, especially when it gets to that stage when it’s craving a good cut. I use it on its own or sometimes as a booster to the No.0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment and leave it in overnight. The other product I can’t be without is Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hair Oil. Nothing I’ve tried infuses my strands with as much hydration and softness as this, and the incredible jasmine scent is addictive (incidentally if you’re as besotted as I am, you can now buy it in candle form).

Don’t Skip The Styling

A lazier me used to bypass a regular styling regime, but it really is worth figuring out what your hair needs and finding a couple of great products to help you achieve it. The George Northwood Moisturising Cream is a staple for at-home styling, while I keep the mini version of Larry King’s A Social Life for Your Hair in my bag to tame on-the-go flyaway emergencies. Both give my hair a polished finish without weighing it down.

Don’t Limit Yourself

Years of watching hair stylists at work backstage has taught me one very valuable lesson when it comes to styling products: you always need more product than you think. It’s something I’ve been putting into practice with one of my favourite new styling finds, Hersheson’s Zhoosh Foam. It uses dry powder-foam technology and gives me the kind of effortless oomph I’ve been searching for forever, and that is a hallmark of co-founder Luke Hersheson’s signature style. I work two very big, marshmallowy blobs through my hair from root to tip and wonder how I ever styled my hair without it.

Choose Your Tools Wisely

I never used to have the time or patience to use heated tools, but that all changed as soon as I tried the Dyson Supersonic, which is still the fastest and most effective hair dryer I’ve used – perfect if you don’t like to spend hours on a blow dry or have a lot of hair that takes forever to dry. It is expensive but in terms of cost per use, it’s a no-brainer. Once my hair is about 90% dry, I go in with the Hot Tools Black Gold Volumiser 2-In-1 Brush & Dryer. Unlike others I’ve tried, it never tugs or tangles hair – no matter how much you twist and turn the brush, but just gives me the same smooth, glossy finish as a great blow dry, without the middleman.
