The Beauty Insider: Lisa Potter Dixon’s Beauty Rules

Every make-up artist has their favourite products that they keep in their professional kit. These products are also great for our everyday make-up bags. So here you go: I’ve called on a couple of my friends to share their all-time favourites. I’ve thrown in a couple of my own too and also included some insider tips on decanting…

Lisa Potter Dixon (@Lisapotterdixon) Recommends...

Biafine Cream, £7.28

This French icon is incredible for adding hydration to even the driest of skin. It’s a non-toxic, cream emulsion that is great for all skin types, particularly sensitive skin. It’s been in my kit forever and has been a godsend at fashion weeks, when lots of models have irritation because of the amount of product being used on them daily.

Available at Profarma.com

Chanel Baume Essentiel, £33

Skin is everything and creating the perfect complexion takes time and prep. This Chanel balm is one of my all-time favourite products. I have one in my kit and one in my personal make-up bag because it adds a non-sticky gloss to the skin that gives an incredible glow without any shimmer.

Cher Webb (@CherWebbMakeUp) Recommends...

Bioderma Micellar Water, £10.80

This has been one of my hero products in my skincare kit for years. It’s so gentle and effective, and it works on every skin type. It’s now stocked in most beauty retailers and pharmacy stores in the UK, although I always stock up in Paris, where it’s so much cheaper.

Available at Boots.com

MAC Studio Face And Body Foundation, £30

For backstage runway looks and editorial, this is a force to be reckoned with. It’s a cult MAC classic and has been a make-up artist favourite since the 90s. You can create authentic skin looks with this – it’s the one I want for any no-make-up make-up look. It also looks unreal on the body. A definite must-have.

Laura Louise (@LauraLouMakeUp) Recommends...

Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer, £35

This gives a beautiful sheer and dewy finish. I find it has a touch more coverage than the non-oil-free version. It seems to work for everyone – and is even great for guys.

Available at Cultbeauty.co.uk

Stila Convertible Colour, £16

A beautiful multi-use cream colour in an array of shades. It creates a glowy flush, looks beautiful on lips and cheeks, and is super quick and easy to use.

Available at Beautybay.com

Lan Nguyen-Grealis (@LansLondon) Recommends...

Seoulista Beauty Correct & Calm Face Mask, £7.99

I swear by these as they are 100% workable for any client that wants a little extra before makeup. It hydrates the skin, makes them feel and look good instantly.

Available at Lookfantastic.com

Revolution Pro X Lan Nguyen-Grealis Ultimate Artist Palette, £15

It is exactly what it says on the package: an all-in-one face palette that’s versatile and creative. It’s so handy on set as well as at home.

MUA Tips: Decanting

Given how gorgeous so much packaging is now, it might seem like sacrilege to remove it. But if, like me, you have more lippies than you can count, it becomes impossible to find the right shade on set, so creating lipstick, blusher and shadow palettes is a must. It’s also really satisfying, a brilliant way to save space, and will encourage you to get creative as you can easily mix shades to create your own.

Lipsticks
Muji pill holders are brilliant for this. Start by putting the shades in colour order, then cut off the tip of the lipstick and gently press the product into one of the dividers. Do not melt lipsticks. There have been many YouTube videos demonstrating this technique, but it makes the oil rise to the top, meaning the pigment is never the same again. Make sure you recycle the packaging. If you have a lot of MAC lipsticks, you can take three empties to any MAC shop and they’ll give you a new lipstick of your choice!

Blushers and eyeshadows
The majority of blushers and bronzers come in a metal pan. They are usually encapsulated in a plastic container, but can be lifted out of this by carefully slotting a blunt dinner knife down the sides. Z palettes are brilliant. With a magnetic base, you can stick your blushers into one clear palette, making it super easy to see your collection. The same can be done with eyeshadows.

Love & Lipstick,
