Stylish Swimwear To Wear This Summer

Focus On The Fit
Trends and designs vary, but a swimsuit that fits well should be your top priority. “A well-fitting swimsuit that has some form of adjustability and hidden internal support is a must,” say Lynne Tramonte and Kay Howitt, founders of Australian swimwear brand Monte & Lou. “A flattering style will ultimately make you feel more confident, so opt for something that’s easily adjustable, with a bit of underwiring if needed,” adds Lynne. Melissa Odabash, founder of her eponymous resort label, agrees: “Women have more confidence when they are aware of what suits them, so always look for swimwear that shows off your best assets – for example, if you want to highlight an hourglass shape, go for a ruched design.”
Don’t Be Afraid To Wear A Bikini
Swimsuits are often what we feel most comfortable in, but don’t think bikinis are totally off limits. “There is no age cap for bikinis – it’s about what you feel most comfortable in,” says Melissa. “For the best finish, choose styles that have adjustable straps or a tie strap across the back to ensure you’re getting the right support,” she adds. Similarly, Lynne advises going for what you’re most comfortable in: “Wearing a bikini is all about inner confidence. If you do want something to minimise your chest area, choose styles with appropriate support to lift the bust and highlight your waist,” she says. “Going for a high-waisted bottom is not only on trend but will create an hourglass shape and give the impression of elongating your legs, too,” adds Kay.
Make The Most Of Supported Options
Most of us will have some underwired swimwear in our collection, but tummy-shaping and the like have, historically, not had the chicest reputation. These days, however, there is a variety of subtler supported options that tick the style box too. “Body sculpting is actually something to feel positive about,” says Lynne. “The lining in our designs at Monte & Lou is made from recycled nylon and elastane content, giving firm support which still feels soft against your skin.” Likewise, Melissa believes that understated support is the way forward: “As we get older, especially if you’ve had children, your body loses some of its firmness, so the combination of an underwire plus wider sides will help to keep everything in place.” If you’re smaller chested and don’t need quite as much support, look out for brands that offer half-wiring to strike the balance between bralet and fully adjusted.
Know Which Prints Work For You
Avoiding a print often seems like the easiest option but, when chosen carefully, playful prints are a great way to inject some fun into your swimwear wardrobe. “Many mature ladies prefer a pattern that has a darker background, as well as tightly packed florals in tonal hues,” suggests Kay. “While it might seem busy, animal print really works too as it’s neutral and therefore doesn’t seem quite so in your face. Stripes also remain a classic choice,” she adds. While Melissa believes anything goes for any age, choosing prints wisely is worth it: “Anything that’s not too loud will look the chicest,” she says.
If In Doubt, Keep It Simple
Frills, textured fabric and other design details have their place, but the easiest way to get swimwear right is to stick to something pared back. Opt for classic cuts with simple necklines and wider straps, while classic black or white is always a favourite failsafe option. “Make sure you take a black and a white swimsuit with you on holiday – it’s so elegant and will last you for years and is never out of style!” advises Melissa. Lynne agrees: “Every woman should have a great black swimsuit – from halternecks to plunging necklines, find one that works for you and you’re bound to feel confident.”
