I don’t strive to look perfect. I try to be as real as I can and I think things are getting better, easier and more accepting with every generation coming through. I would like to think mine has played their part in that. It’s something that connects people to me – that I don’t try to be perfect.
That said, I do think there’s now more pressure on me to look a certain way. My relationship with skincare hasn’t really changed but I have tried a lot more things because I’ve been given access to a lot more things. As such, I now feel more pressure to look good. I definitely didn’t used to care. So if anything has changed, it’s probably how much I care now.
I wish I could say my skin doesn’t affect my confidence, but it does. I’ve struggled with acne for years and I've tried a lot of different things. It’s been hard to find products that work. I’ve been relying on the new CeraVe blemish patches quite a lot. I really like products that get to work immediately. For me, I just want to get rid of something that springs up quickly – especially right now. It’s fashion month and having to go to an event with a whitehead or an angry-looking spot is not ideal. Blemish patches take care of business immediately.
If I could only keep three things in my make-up bag, the first would be some form of eyebrow gel. Even if you're not wearing make-up, just sorting out your eyebrows can sometimes be enough to make it look like you've made an effort. I always have the CeraVe blemish patches to hand and then some kind of lip gloss.
My skincare routine is quite minimal. I'll use the CereVe acne wash and then apply the patches, and moisturise the parts of my skin that aren’t covered. Less can sometimes be more if you’re breakout prone. A lot of people who struggle with acne trust CeraVe and I'm definitely one of them.
A beauty trend I’ll never try again has to be feathered brows – it just didn’t work for me. But I’ve been thinking about bleaching my eyebrows all year. I want to shave them off or make them really skinny. I’ll probably wait until after fashion month is over so people don't yell at me!
If you're worried about coming across as silly, the worst thing you can do is look uncomfortable. It doesn't matter what you're doing – for example, if you're dancing, the only way to look embarrassed is if people can tell you feel self-conscious. I've seen people do some crazy things on the dance floor, and I've never thought they looked embarrassed unless I can tell they are. So, even if you’re insecure about your skin, owning it and the journey you’re on makes it inspiring for other people. Remembering that will give you the confidence you need.
Sometimes, advice from other people just doesn’t help when you’re going through it. It’s better to remember that everything in life ebbs and flows – the acne will pass, the breakup will pass, everything will pass. You have to experience the lows to enjoy the highs. I also don’t take my own advice – when bad things happen, I feel it, so it’s best to just ride the wave.
