Where To Find The Best Burgers In London

Few things hit the spot like a good burger. Whether you like a simple patty in a brioche bun or something truffled or loaded up, we don’t think you’ll find better than these in London…

Black Bear Burger

With a few spots around London and a permanent outpost in Brixton’s bustling market, Black Bear says the secret to its success is the grass-fed beef it sources from the south west of England. The result? Delicious, high-quality patties with just the right balance of fat and meat. You can’t go wrong with the Double Black Bear – two dry-aged beef patties, American cheese, smoked bacon, garlic mayo, onion jam – but you need to give the Double Miso Burger a go, and cheese fans should know the rarebit crumpet is a must-order.

11-13a Market Row, Brixton, SW9 8LB; 191 Victoria Street, Victoria, SW1E 5NS; 25 North Colonnade, Canary Wharf, E14 5HD; Unit 61 Boxpark, 10 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, E1 6GY

Bleecker

Frequently touted as making the best burger in London, Bleecker started as a street food operation, but now has permanent sites in Spitalfields, Victoria, Westfield and Bloomberg Arcade, as well as delivery-only locations in Battersea, Bermondsey and Maida Vale. The original menu remains, and the group still serves its award-winning Bleecker Black (a double cheeseburger with beef black pudding). If you’re hungry, add the Angry Fries topped with hot sauce and blue cheese sauce.

Lagom

You’ll find Lagom in the railway arches at Hackney Central, where it shares a space with the Hackney Church Brewing Company – a match made in heaven. Chef Elliot Cunningham mans the wood grill, cooking up smoky meats, experimental vegetarian options and killer burger patties. The restaurant's name translates as ‘just enough’ in Swedish, and that sums up its famous burger, too: aged beef, with a pit-fire smokiness, in a milk potato bun with mustard-mayo, American cheese and a vinegar slaw for tang.

MEATliquor

It might be one of the messiest we’ve tried, but MEATliquor’s ‘Dead Hippie’ is still up there with the best in the city. It’s sizeable – you don’t necessarily need chips with it – but you’ll be ready once you’ve made it through the queues outside its seven locations around town. Between the buns, expect two mustard-fried patties, shredded lettuce, cheese, pickles and that secret Dead Hippie sauce.

Four Legs At The Plimsoll

If you live in north London, this pub-based burger spot should be on your radar. Similar to others on this list, Four Legs started life as a pop-up (at the Compton Arms) before its move to The Plimsoll in Finsbury Park. Chefs Ed McIlroy and Jamie Allan have built their reputation on their thrown-together Dexter Burger which has turned Plimsoll reservations into gold dust. The burger itself is big, loaded with dripping cheese and burger sauce, and there’s no lettuce in sight.

Blacklock

Blacklock’s Shoreditch spot is our favourite of its five London sites. In keeping with the hip neighbourhood, it’s an ex-warehouse with lots of exposed brick, big windows, dark leather and industrial décor. Its double cheeseburger is loaded with caramelised onions coated in a generous amount of vermouth – so it gets that boozy, meaty, umami flavour profile spot on. Go full throttle and opt for the beef-dripping chips as a side.

24 Great Windmill Street, Soho, W1D 7LG; 13 Philpot Lane, City, EC3M 8AA; 28-30 Rivington Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 3DZ; 16a Bedford Street, Covent Garden, WC2E 9HE; 5 Frobisher Passage, Canary Wharf, E14 4EE

The Lowback At Hawksmoor

We love the juxtaposition of an upscale venue with a messy burger. At Hawksmoor’s The Lowback bar, you’ll find Big Matt’s burger – named after the group’s Michelin-starred executive chef. It has two dry-aged beef patties, Hawksmoor special sauce, Sparkenhoe red Leicester cheese, shredded lettuce, onions, and homemade pickles. So, just like the Canary Wharf venue, this burger’s a bit fancy.

Truffle Burger

Another street-food pop-up that’s hit the bigtime, Truffle Burger now has five spots around town. If you like truffle, you’ll be pleased to hear five of the six burgers on the menu make use of it. Start with the signature truffle burger: beef and smoked bacon patty, raclette cheese, fig jam, crispy onions and a healthy dose of truffle mayonnaise. The triple-cooked loaded fries also come with Truffalo sauce – a mix of truffles and buffalo sauce.

Manna

If you haven’t got a favourite smashed patty spot yet, you need to try Manna. It started as a residence at Tottenham Court Road’s Arcade Food Hall, and has just added its own bricks-and-mortar site in Battersea Power Station. The straight-up smash burger is a solid choice, but our must-order is the hot version – the base is the same, but this one is loaded with pickled jalapeños, spicy chilli oil and in-house sauce.
