Turn Jeans Into A Midi Skirt

Midi skirts are a big trend this season and they’re the perfect way to switch up your regular jeans-and-a-tee combo. If, like us, you’re looking for a more affordable way to get the look – and have access to a sewing machine – this hack is worth a try. Small brand @Henne explained how to transform its Valentina jeans. Start by unpicking the leg seams and hang your jeans up to assess whether any excess fabric needs removing. Maintain that oversized look where possible, but feel free to trim things down if you want a more fitted finish. Also, think about your desired length – you can chop a bit off the hem depending on your preference. Pin things in place to visualise the finished result and decide if you want a front or back slit. Then, using a sewing machine, simply connect the seams.

Elevate Them With Embellishments

Embellishments are the easiest way to tap into the Y2K trend. All you need is a pair of jeans or a denim jacket – or even a bucket hat. You have plenty of options to choose from – whether you want to bedazzle using stick-ons or a colourful patch, or use fabric markers to draw something on. Just remember to stencil or draw out your design before sticking anything on for the cleanest result – this is what the creator behind Taylor Swift’s viral Butterfly jeans did.

Nail The Cross-Over Waist Trend

This trend has been around for a few years, with Agolde’s pricier version being a key reference. Since then, the high street has adopted the crossover waist look for less but, if you’ve got access to a sewing machine, converting an existing pair of jeans is simpler than you’d think. Start by using a good pair of fabric scissors and chopping along the button and zip line of the jeans. Then cut a triangular section from this area, before using a sewing machine to restitch the waist and zip with an asymmetric finish. While it may sound a bit complicated, this hack only requires a small amount of sewing. Try it out on shorts and skirts, too.

Finally, Dye Them

We probably all gave tie-dye a go during lockdown and dying your denim is just as easy. Start by putting on some rubber gloves and filling a container with hot water. To this, add one teaspoon of washing-up liquid, a cup of salt and a bottle of dye. A lot of people on TikTok recommend Rit. Mix this in with the water before throwing in your jeans and soaking them for around an hour – leave it in longer for a darker wash. Tip out the dye water and place the jeans into a fresh container of clean water to remove any excess colour – keep rinsing and refilling with clean water until the water runs clear. Then, wash your denim using a regular washing tablet in the machine – or a container if you’re worried about there being too much dye. Then dry them, give them an iron and you’re good to go.
