Thickening Tonic, £22.50 | Aveda

A cult classic for a reason, this thickening tonic is always recommended by top stylists. The idea is you spray it onto damp hair then dry it with a hairdryer or a towel, flipping your head upside down. Give your hair a ruffle as you go to deposit the product properly and even it out. Once you’ve finished styling, you’ll immediately see a difference – notably less frizz, better density and all without any tell-tale stickiness or grease. The addition of organic amla fruit keeps dry strands soft, while botanicals add shine and moisture that lasts for days.

Replumping Hair Filler Superactive, £23.50 | Davines

Davines is one of those brands that doesn’t get enough recognition. Like Aveda, its range is full of cult products that experts swear by, including this hair filler. Use a small amount on your hair post-shampoo – it needs to be damp, but not sopping wet – then blast it with a hairdryer, or let it air dry for a soft, beachy effect. Either way, you’ll find it visibly lifts strands and gives hair a softer texture. We love how weightless it feels and the soft scent that keeps you sniffing at your hair all day. Our only tip is to spray it on from a good distance away. If you get too close to your scalp, you run the risk of applying too much to one area. Small but mighty, it’s great for travel too.

My Nanna’s Mousse, £19 | Larry King

Gone are the days of crispy, heavy mousses. With a soft texture, Larry King’s Nanna’s Mousse absorbs fast and offers a thickening, plumping effect that is unrivalled. It adds shine – even for blondes – while delivering volume that’s not sticky or heavy, just full with a fluffed-up feel. Pump the formula out once into your hand then massage it into wet hair. We recommend using a wide-tooth comb to take it through your hair and deposit it fully. Blast it with a dryer using a rounded brush, tipping your head forward as you go to enhance the lift. Use to it regularly and you’ll enjoy a long-term boost to elasticity and softness, meaning less breakage over time.

I Create Volume Lotion, £24 | Innersense

This is often recommended by hairdressers for those with fine, curly hair, and it’s easy to see why. It gives wavy hair great volume, definition and shape, holding curls in place for the entire day. Unlike the Davines, you should use this on soaking wet hair (that has been shampooed and conditioned) to get the best results and you only need the tiniest amount on each section you apply it to. You can let your hair dry naturally, but we recommend using a dryer and a brush to distribute the product evenly, otherwise hair can feel a little crunchy. Once you’ve done this, you’ll see your hair is softer, shinier and bouncier.

Modern Hairspray, £22 | Sam McKnight

The name is deceiving for this product. Though it adds hold and longevity to any style, it’s more of a texturiser, providing instant bounce and volume to even the limpest of strands. It’s lightweight, with a super fine texture that doesn’t leave a trace of crispiness. Use it before or after heat styling your hair, or simply to hit refresh and boost shine. The soft, floral fragrance takes time to get used to, but it does give hair a clean and fresh feel. A must-try if you want something quick and easy.

Root Boost Spray Volume, £19.35 | Moroccanoil

Designed for use on towel-dried hair, this foamy mist is ideal for lifting hair and holding it there. Just a small amount helps to push your strands upwards from the root, giving your hair visible bounce and extra oomph that doesn’t disappear as the day wears on. It also uses argan kernel oil to deliver hydration and smoothness. Even better, it has a woody, smoky amber fragrance that conjures a sense of Morocco.

Volumising Primer, £36 | Virtue

It’s called a primer, but it’s so much more than that. Not only does it protect against heat and environmental damage – think dulling pollution – it also strengthens with something called Alpha Keratin 60ku protein. The latter is also proven to build impressive density and texture with just a few spritzes. The only thing it doesn’t do is boost shine or hydration, so if you’re looking to tackle either of these issues, another on this list may be better suited to you. This one’s great for minimal faff though: apply it onto damp or dry hair at a distance, aiming at your roots for maximum body and lift.

Instant Lift Thickening Spray, £12 | Kristin Ess

Not all thickening sprays give results that last, but this one by Kristin Ess does – and for at least a few days post application. It’s also more affordable than some on this list. Dubbed a ‘liquid mousse’, it can be applied to towel-dried hair and left or blow dried depending on the texture you want to achieve. Either way, you’ll find it instantly adds volume but without leaving a heaviness behind. Instead, you get a shiny effect and a fullness that’s satisfying to touch. We also rate it for its ability to improve manageability of hair – think fewer knots and minimal frizz.

Ultimate Volume Shampoo & Conditioner, £47 (were £53) | Swell

There are many shampoos and conditioners that claim to boost volume, but we’ve noticed the biggest difference with this duo from Swell. The fact they regularly sell out is testament to just how effective they are, and so are the consistently rave reviews. Using peptides, root nutrients and botanical actives, the formulas boost volume and weight – albeit temporarily – to give your hair a full-bodied effect. They brim with apple stem cell extract, which is proven to strengthen hair and prevent it from breaking prematurely. An expense, but a worthy one if you’re serious about maintaining healthy hair – plus, a little of both goes a very long way.
