A Celebrity Make-Up Artist Shares Her Beauty Secrets
Never Skip Skin Prep
Finding the right skin prep routine is really important and the best way to do this is by exploring – what works for one person may not work for someone else. After applying the prep products that work for you, I would recommend waiting five or ten minutes before applying your foundation so your skin can absorb the moisture and feel more hydrated.
Go Lighter With The Coverage
The Revitalessence Skin Glow Foundation from Shiseido strikes the perfect balance between glow-y and pigmented. If you think you need a little more coverage, just add a bit of concealer where needed – I often use a couple of colours to tackle different undertones and problem areas. I love making the skin look flawless.
Mix & Match Your Foundations
This is the best way to get acquainted with the textures and brands that work for you. In terms of finding your perfect foundation colour, people often ask if you should go up or down a shade. In my opinion it's best to find a true match – or as close as you can get. Add more dimension with contour, and light with a highlight, then a final flush of colour with blush.
Use Colour Correction To Disguise Uneven Skin
People tend to be most concerned with disguising redness and undereye circles, and they try using heavy pigment to cover it up. Really, you should be using a light textured foundation because thicker, heavier foundations will only add more texture to problematic skin. I would also look at the root cause and how you can correct it. Often it can be hormonal, an allergic reaction or diet related.
Look Straight Ahead To Nail Winged Liner
It’s a hack that always works to keep the line clean. For brows, enhance their natural shape rather than trying to completely reshape them. I always respect the brows’ natural shape, but sometimes they need a little help – it could be making them more symmetrical, fluffier or filled in. I love using a tone lighter than the client’s natural colour to keep things natural.
Don’t Underestimate The Power Of A Lip Scrub
They’re ideal for buffing away any dryness so they come in handy pre-event or before you want to apply a bold lip. Afterwards, I make sure to apply a good balm to make sure the lips are well hydrated. If you’re creating a look for a formal event, I would recommend using a matte lipstick, so it won’t move. On photoshoots, I prefer playing with glossy textures as I love the way they catch the light.
Focus On The Eyes This Party Season
This was what I did for Hunter Schafer’s look at the recent Hunger Games premiere. We wanted something chic and subtle, so I kept her skin and lips very clean and minimal to let her eyes could do the talking. It’s always a question of how to find harmony and balance between the dress, the hair and the make-up. We always brainstorm what the best glam look would be pre-red carpet. After all, make-up is supposed to be fun.
Find Multipurpose Heroes You Can Rely On
For example, I like using lipstick on different areas of the face – from the cheeks to the eyes. The creamy texture adds a glow that’s always pretty. Just buff it out using the warmth of your fingers or a fluffy brush.
