Canouan: The Tiny Caribbean Island That Offers Total Luxury

Canouan is a tiny island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines that you’ve probably never heard of – and that’s exactly the point. This is where George Clooney and those in the know retreat for a slice of Caribbean paradise: think untouched beaches, total privacy and an ‘invisible key’ that unlocks every facility on the island. It’s discreet, beautiful and one of the most exclusive destinations in the Caribbean. Here’s what you need to know – and why it should be your next escape…

About The Island

Canouan is one of the jewels in the Grenadines' crown. The definition of unspoiled paradise, you’ll find it in the heart of the Caribbean archipelago, just a short flight (or private jet) from Barbados or St Vincent. Measuring only five sq miles, Canouan is small and feels incredibly exclusive – a place where the pace slows and the scenery is as beautiful as you’d expect. Think green hills tumbling into turquoise bays and wildlife hidden around every corner. The island is also surrounded by the Caribbean’s largest living coral reef. There are no crowds or cruise ships – just a handful of ultra-luxury villas, discreet resorts and a warm community.

Once a sleepy fishing village, Canouan has quietly transformed into one of the Caribbean’s most coveted destinations for barefoot luxury with a serious dose of polish. This is partly thanks to the arrival of Mandarin Oriental which opened a grand property nearly ten years ago, as well as a Soho Beach House outpost (but more on that later). For a small island, the infrastructure is slick, but there’s still a laidback atmosphere that encourages guests to unwind the minute they step off the plane. Locals will greet you by name, turtles nest on the beaches and the rhythm of life is dictated by the sun, not a schedule.

The Nature

Canouan is affectionately known as ‘turtle island’ – and for good reason. Its pristine beaches and protected reefs are a sanctuary for hawksbill and green sea turtles, which nest here in huge numbers. Between May and October, you might spot tiny hatchlings making their way to the sea at dawn – a rare sight that speaks to the island’s ecological integrity. You’ll also likely have to dodge larger turtles that stumble onto the roads as you explore by golf buggy or car. Conservation is quietly woven into the fabric of the island, with marine reserves, low-impact development and a deep respect for its ecosystem.

Beyond the turtles, the island’s biodiversity is impressive. Hummingbirds flit through the hibiscus, iguanas lounge on volcanic rocks, and the surrounding waters are alive with barracuda, parrotfish and eagle rays. Whether you’re hiking Mount Royal for panoramic views or snorkelling off in the turquoise waters, you don’t have to venture far from your room to be surrounded by nature.

The Accommodation Options

Canouan offers a unique accommodation experience unlike anywhere else. On arrival, guests will be granted an ‘invisible key’ which gives them access to every facility on the island, meaning you can stay at one hotel, use the spa at another and drop kids off at the island’s brilliant kids’ club.

Soho Beach House

If you choose to stay at one resort on the island, choose Soho Beach House Canouan, one of the group’s smallest and most remote outposts. Unlike the other Houses, you do not need to be a member to stay here – anyone can book to enjoy this beachside property. The interiors channel a bohemian feel yet remain chic and curated. After a ten-minute drive from the airport, the team will greet you with a fresh coconut before whisking away your luggage to your room. There are 40 rooms spread across white buildings with traditional blue tin roofs, ranging from cosy doubles to larger suites with separate living areas. All have direct access to the beach or balconies looking over the water – the perfect spot to start your day with coffee or end it with sundowners. Tonal colour palettes and natural textures add to the relaxed atmosphere.

The hub of the hotel is the central beach restaurant and bar next to the jetty. Enjoy eggs or acai bowls for breakfast, before a crowd-pleasing menu of salads, grilled seafood, Caribbean dishes and more can be ordered throughout the day – think jumbo shrimp with jerk sauce and papaya salad. Further along the rocks and over the water there’s a private dining space for groups or special occasions, while the jetty can host romantics dinners and even proposals.

Of course, wellness is central to the property. There’s a small spa and a gym with modern fitness equipment, including reformer Pilates machines where guests can book one-to-one sessions. Yoga and fitness bootcamps are also on offer. When you’re not exploring the island, you’ll want to be relaxing on a beach lounger or cabana with a picante in hand or gently lapping at the water on one of the hotel’s paddleboards or kayaks.

As well as offering R&R, this is a fun hotel where you can do as little or as much as you like. Friendly staff set the vibe and are happy to drink with you at the bar or even set up a karaoke machine so you can sing your favourite songs.

Mandarin Oriental

Just a short drive away you’ll find Mandarin Oriental Canouan. For impeccable service and something a little grander, the resort is all about Caribbean hospitality done right. The property is a gleaming  hideaway on Godahl Beach that feels both traditional and contemporary: think blush-pink façades, vaulted ceilings and panoramic sea views from every room. Each suite feels like its own sanctuary, with private terraces, palatial bathrooms and a sense of space that’s rare in the region. You can also choose to stay in penthouses and private villas. The vibe is polished yet relaxed – where barefoot breakfasts segue into yacht-side cocktails.

Service is where the hotel excels. Guests are assigned personal butlers who anticipate every need, from unpacking luggage to arranging sunset boat trips. The open-air spa is another highlight. Set high above the sea with sweeping views of the Grenadines, you’ll arrive by golf buggy and ease into the experience with herbal teas. Designed to evoke a sense of calm and connection, its treatment rooms are tucked into the hillside, each one a private palapa where the breeze drifts in and the soundtrack is pure nature. Therapies draw on both eastern and Caribbean traditions, with signature treatments like the ‘Island Serenity Massage’ using locally sourced oils and time-honoured techniques.

Guests can also indulge in facials by Biologique Recherche, Ayurvedic rituals and book bespoke wellness journeys tailored to their needs. There’s a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a yoga pavilion with panoramic views, and a beauty studio for finishing touches.

The culinary offering spans elegant beachfront dining to intimate in-suite experiences, with menus that celebrate fresh, local ingredients. Expect just-caught seafood, tropical fruits and Caribbean spices. Lagoon Café serves Mediterranean-inspired plates with a Caribbean twist, while TIDES Bar & Grill offers laidback luxury with grilled lobster, ceviche and expertly mixed rum cocktails. For something truly special, private dining can be arranged on the beach or aboard a yacht.

The Experiences

During a stay, be sure to ask your concierge team to book a half-day or full-day boat cruise to the Tobago Cays – a protected marine park made up of five uninhabited islands, where the water is impossibly clear and the snorkelling is world-class. You’ll swim with turtles, spot stingrays and enjoy grilled lobster at the beach shack restaurant.

Guests can also paddleboard across glassy bays, kayak through hidden coves or dive into snorkelling and scuba excursions to explore coral reefs. The island’s calm waters make it ideal for sailing and many resorts offer private charters for sunset cruises or island-hopping. On land, there’s tennis, golf, and wellness experiences ranging from yoga to meditation.

It’s also worth visiting Canouan’s village which offers a glimpse into local life, with pastel-painted houses, friendly faces and a tiny church. Other days could be spent hiking Mount Royal for panoramic views, playing a round on the Jim Fazio-designed golf course or enjoying a beachside massage.

The Kids’ Club

Canouan might be the ultimate escape for grown-ups, but it’s just as magical for little ones. All guests staying on the island have access to the kids’ club, a thoughtfully designed space for babies to teens. Set within lush gardens and just moments from the beach, it offers a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. Kids can spot turtles on the lawn, swim in two pools, play dress up, take part in cooking classes, play a game of pool or unwind with video games. Adults are also welcome to stay to take part in activities. For children, it’s a mini adventure they won’t want to leave.

Getting There

Canouan is remote by design, but surprisingly accessible. One of the easiest routes is to fly to Barbados or St Vincent. From there you can take a short (40-minute) onward flight operated by SVG Air to Canouan’s small airport, which also welcomes private jets and chartered planes. Transfers to your resort or villa are swift and scenic.

The Need To Knows

When to Go: Canouan enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round, but the sweet spot is between December and May – when skies are clear and humidity is low. It’s also outside the Caribbean’s hurricane season, making it ideal for winter sun.

Temperature: Expect highs of 28-30°C and balmy evenings around 24°C. The sea stays warm and swimmable throughout the year.

Currency: The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), though US dollars are widely accepted across the island.

Time Zone: GMT-4.

Things to Note: The island is blissfully quiet, so pack books, resort wear and reef-safe sunscreen. There are no ATMs, so bring cash, though most places accept cards.
