All The New Michelin-Starred Restaurants In The UK & Ireland

Every year, the brightest stars in the restaurant industry gather for the culinary ceremony of the year: the unveiling of the Michelin Guide. This year, the awards took place in Manchester for the first time – and threw out some bold new choices. Here’s where to book for a special occasion in 2024…

Last night, Michelin announced which restaurants had made it into the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland. Each year, Michelin’s team of anonymous restaurant inspectors award venues with one star (“high-quality cooking, worth a stop”), two stars (“excellent cooking, worth a detour”) or three stars (“exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey”).

There was one of the latter this year, as Brett Graham’s The Ledbury – which closed during the pandemic and returned to London with its original two stars last year – won a full three stars at last night’s ceremony. There was a handful of exciting two-star announcements too. In London, Claude Bosi’s newest opening – Brooklands at The Peninsula London – only opened in October 2023, but already has two stars to its name. Much-loved Gymkhana became London’s first Indian restaurant to have two Michelin stars and Trivet in Bermondsey also scored a double. Across the UK, Opheem became Birmingham’s first-ever two-starred establishment; Terre in County Cork gained another star; as did The Glenturret Lalique in Crieff, Scotland.

In total, 18 restaurants picked up their first star. London teams earning their first accolade include 2023’s most-hyped restaurant, Tomos Parry’s Mountain; 1890 by Gordon Ramsay at The Savoy; excellent West African restaurants Akoko and Chishuru; and SL favourites Dorian in Notting Hill and Humble Chicken in Soho. Across the rest of the UK and Ireland, there were wins for Crocadon in St Mellion and Mýse in Yorkshire.

In 2021, the guide added a Green star to its roster, which recognises sustainable gastronomy and distinguishes restaurants taking responsibility in the conversation of resources and the protection of biodiversity. Six were announced this year: Annwn in Narberth, Exmoor Forest Inn in Simonsbath, Forge in Middleton Tyas, The Whitebrook in Whitebrook, Restaurant St Bart’s in London and Interlude in Lower Beeding.

Last week, the Michelin Bib Gourmands were unveiled. Named after Bibendum – the Michelin Man – the Bib Gourmand distinction “highlights restaurants offering good food at competitive prices”. This year, 20 new restaurants have made it into the 2024 Great Britain & Ireland selection, including Higher Ground in Manchester, Empire Empire in London, Dill in Lewes, Palmito in Hove and buzzy pub The Bull in Charlbury.
