# How An Edwardian Townhouse Became A Family-Friendly Home

Souq Studio founder Roxi Zeman is known for creating spaces that balance warmth, texture and understated luxury. In this three-storey Edwardian townhouse, the interior designer brought that vision to life through earthy tones, natural materials and thoughtful details designed to support both family life and entertaining. From the marble mosaic hallway to the open-plan kitchen and living area, each space feels carefully considered yet relaxed – resulting in a home that’s timeless, comfortable and perfectly suited to modern living. Here, she gives us the tour…

## The Property

This project is a three-storey, semi-detached Edwardian townhouse in a conservation area. Home to a couple and their young son, the client reached out to me to redesign her family home. The ground floor extension and overall layout were designed by architect Adie Perkins, who reconfigured the rear and side of the house to create the open plan kitchen, dining and living space. Adie also designed the architectural elements throughout the ground floor, including the roof lanterns, external doors, ceiling details and all of the bespoke joinery, which form the architectural framework for the interiors. We started the transformation from the top level down, knowing the ground floor would require the most significant changes. Our goal was to create spaces that felt curated yet effortless, with a blend of earthy tones and rich textures.

## The Brief

We aimed to balance comfort and style with soft lighting and cosy corners to make both the family and their guests feel at home. Natural materials were key to the design, with wood, stone, sisal, linen, and patinated metals creating that organic, down-to-earth vibe. For the open-plan ground floor kitchen and living area, we focused on fostering connection, creating distinct zones while ensuring the flow between them felt seamless, with a sense of relaxed luxury to encourage conversation and gathering. Above all, our approach was about timelessness. By choosing classic pieces with a modern twist, we rooted the aesthetic in high-quality materials, making each space feel both ageless and contemporary. The home feels warm, sophisticated and practical – conducive to the lifestyle of a young family.

## The Hallway

First impressions matter and this marble mosaic floor sets the tone. Glazed double doors in a mocha wood tone, designed by architect [Adie Perkins](https://adieperkins.com/), go into the study. A sisal runner adds texture and repetitive lighting creates flow. We took the wall moulding you can see here into the passageways and landings throughout.

## The Study

I love the tone of this herringbone smoked oak floor; it works so well again the colour-drenched walls. We designed some striking bespoke joinery with feature lighting to give it a focal point and inject some character.

## The Kitchen

A new ground floor extension creates a generous open plan kitchen, dining and living space that opens directly onto the garden. The layout revolves around a large island that naturally anchors the room, while allowing the kitchen to connect effortlessly with both the dining and seating areas. Bespoke timber cabinetry introduces warmth and depth, with a stain slightly richer than the floor, so the kitchen feels layered and integrated. A heavily veined marble worktop and splashback introduce movement and drama, creating a strong visual focal point within an otherwise calm tonal palette. Limewashed walls, unlacquered brass fittings and woven bar stools add texture and softness, ensuring the kitchen feels relaxed and welcoming rather than overly polished. A long marble shelf runs across the wall, providing both practical storage and a sculptural detail.

This side entrance is conducive to messy dog walks and buggy storage. Terracotta tiles work well for the flooring, alongside deep sage green for the cabinetry. Good layered lighting keeps the space functional with the large lantern taking centre stage.

## The Living Room

The living area and fireplace are positioned at the heart of the open plan space, which sits between the kitchen and dining zones. The modular rust sofa anchors the space and clever joinery means it can be completely closed off when required. The marble fireplace surround and interesting mirror act as focal points in here, with a large chandelier zoning the space from the top down.
