15 Bridal Headwear Styles To Consider

From traditional hats to glamorous turbans, nowadays many a bride is opting for a stylish head piece over a traditional veil. If you’re tempted to follow suit, here’s what you ought to consider and some of our favourites.

DO wear classic pieces with a touch of irony. If you’re wearing a trouser suit, for example, a pillbox hat is going to look dated. It has to feel playful, so a traditional hat is best worn with floaty, boho styles for serious juxtaposition – unless of course you’re going for a turban, in which case you should channel that Bianca Jagger look.

DON’T have fussy hair. Go for relaxed, beachy waves or a super-slicked back pony or bun – nothing in between. Clean, simple hair will let the hat stand out, and keep the look modern.

DO stick to low key accessories elsewhere. A hat is a big statement, so keep your jewellery minimal, and handbags and shoes pared-back.

“There are no hard and fast rules – ultimately, it’s whatever brings you joy and what makes you feel beautiful on the day.”

DO balance out veiled designs with a feminine look. That could mean something silky and slinky or something organza and full-bodied like Bettina Looney – essentially, you’re going for that slightly coquettish, sexy feel.

DON’T buy a style you’ll only wear once. The beauty of weddings these days is that there aren’t one set of rules anymore, so from the dress to the shoes and the headwear, you can invest in styles you’ll come back to.

“Commissioning a bridal headpiece is similar to commissioning a hat. Ask yourself what is the tone of the event? What do you feel comfortable wearing? What kind of statement are you trying to make? Try on lots of different pieces with your dress to see what you love.”

“It’s cool to mix up aesthetics, so if you’re wearing a gown pair it with a hat or headpiece, or if you’re wearing a blazer match it with a cascading veil.”
