The Eco-Friendly Car Seat Parents Need To Know About

There’s no bigger priority for parents than child safety, so it makes sense to invest in the best car seat available. Britax Römer is known for developing some of the safest designs around and now, it’s upped the ante by designing the first ever carbon-neutral seat as part of its sustainable Green Sense collection. Here’s everything you need to know about the KIDFIX i-SIZE…

The Brand

As parents, you want to know your children are as safe as possible – no more so than in the car. Britax's mission is to provide safe, comfortable, sustainable, easy-to-use solutions when you’re out and about and for more than 50 years, it’s been an industry leader in child safety technology and expertise – hence why the KIDFIX i-SIZE seat (for 3-12 year olds) was recently declared ‘the best car seat for big kids’ in the latest round of of ADAC crash-tests (October 2022).

The SLIM DESIGN allows for THREE KIDFIX i-SIZE seats to be installed ON THE BACK ROW of a wide range of cars, while the headrest markings will help parents find THE RIGHT HEADREST HEIGHT in minutes.

The First Carbon Neutral Seat

KIDFIX i-SIZE isn’t just about saving lives, it’s also about saving the planet. Specifically, Britax partnered with TÜV Rheinland to calculate the product carbon footprint of the KIDFIX i-SIZE at ca.19 kg CO2e. Now, to offset these emissions, it's investing in clean drinking water for schools and households in Uganda – a certified project that means they can describe the seat as 'carbon neutral'. Plus, all packaging the packaging has been replaced with sustainable alternatives, and each one is packed in a plant-based bag and recycled carton made from responsible sources. Even the tags used for the product information are biodegradable on soil, ensuring no microplastics enter the ecosystem. The seat itself is also made in Britax’s German factory to limit transport routes and minimise the environmental impact.

The Style Credentials

Of course, style still counts, and parents will be pleased to hear there are a rainbow of colours to choose from, three of which are from the Green Sense collection: Atlantic Green, Fossil Grey and, soon, Galaxy Black. The fabric is made from 100% recycled polyester (specifically up to 138 plastic PET bottles per product which is then spun into a super-soft yarn). The diamond-patterned mesh fabric on the seat is also 100% recycled and bordered with stitches to aid air circulation and keep children comfortable on long journeys. Genius.

The Comfort & Practicality Factors

The soft fabric covers are also generously padded but don’t take up lots of room – in fact, the slim design allows for three KIDFIX i-SIZE seats to be installed on the back row of a wide range of cars, while the headrest markings will help parents find the right headrest height in minutes.

The Impact Protection

Should the worst happen, Britax’s Advanced Side Impact Protection (SICT) offers superior protection in the event of a side collision. It reduces impact forces by minimising the distance between the car and the car seat and it then deforms to absorb the energy before it reaches your child. In an emergency, when a seatbelt tightens, it can press hard into a child’s tummy, but the SecureGuard seat belt protects your child’s abdominal area by adding an extra – a fourth – contact point to the three-point seat belt, without restricting their movement. Finally, in case of frontal impact, the XP-PAD – exclusive to Britax – is a shock-absorbing foam pad which prevents your child’s chin jerking forward onto their chest, protecting them from whiplash.
