The Red Lion, Barnes

The Red Lion in Barnes was made for long family meals and Sunday lunches. While adults settle in and order drinks from the bar, little ones can play in the playground out back, which has a small slide and ping pong table. There’s also a great children’s menu featuring dishes like sausages and mash, spaghetti Bolognese, chicken burgers with chips and mini roast dinners on Sundays. Make a beeline for the huge outdoor garden when the weather’s good.

The Hare & Hounds, Osterley

Surrounded by lush green fields, families can enjoy a scenic walk before settling down for lunch at The Hare & Hounds in Osterley. This historic pub is easily reached via a 50-minute drive from London where you’ll find a lovely pub garden. During the summer months, little ones can play in the tipi and wooden climbing frame, before tucking into pub classics like haddock and chips, burgers, and chocolate brownie sundaes. You can host a children’s birthday party there, too.

This small country-style pub is in the historic town of Farnham – part of the scenic Surrey Hills. An ideal spot after a walk in Bourne Woods – where scenes from Gladiator, Robin Hood and the Harry Potter series were all filmed – Bel & The Dragon also has a spacious children’s play area which is open year-round. Known for its hearty meals and laid-back vibe, The Half Moon is one of the best child-friendly pubs in south London. The grade II-listed pub and hotel has a great kid’s menu that caters to even the fussiest of eaters, plus an outdoor play area with a giant connect four. If you’re in west London, make a beeline for The Duke Of Kent in Ealing. The pub has a spacious pub garden with a great playground. Kids can play on the climbing frames, slide and ping pong tables and even better, during the summer months the pub garden has a buzzing atmosphere with regular events held throughout the year.

This family-friendly pub has just installed a range of garden pods where families can sit inside a sheltered outdoor hut. The garden also has a huge playground with climbing frames, a rocking horse and a slide. The Millbourne to Horsell Common circular walk is a lovely route if you have little ones in tow, and it finishes at the pub, just in time for lunch. The Cricketers also has one of the best children’s menus on this list, with dishes like chicken katsu curry, fish finger tacos, margarita pizzas and strawberry and marshmallow kebabs.

This dog-friendly pub is a great choice if you want to get out of the capital for the afternoon. The playground has plenty of fun features to keep kids entertained, including a wooden train track, tipi, and a small climbing area. There’s also a stylish al fresco dining area where parents can watch on as they play while enjoying drinks. In terms of food, kids can try chicken goujons with chips and baked beans, mini burgers, and roast dinners on Sundays.

The Prince Blucher is where you’ll find plenty of craft beers on tap, an atmospheric dining room for families, and a spacious garden with a small children’s play area. Little ones can run around on the grass or play games on the climbing frames before settling down for lunch. The Anglers underwent an extensive renovation a few years ago and now has a spacious beer garden with a huge outdoor play area for kids. There’s a climbing frame, monkey bars, two ping pong tables and a football table. Adults can sit outdoors under umbrellas to enjoy relaxed weekend lunches, or shelter inside in the spacious dining room with its indoor wood burner on chillier days.

This pub might be in Ealing, but it still has a cosy country feel. The playground, with a climbing frame and slide, is next to the beer garden so parents can watch on while little ones play. For a fun family day out, Hanwell Zoo is a short walk away, as is Northala Fields Park for a scenic walk.
