Sydney-based Phoebe Nicol works at the top of the market, specialising in high-end residences and boutiques. Seamlessly blending old and new, she often brings European design classics into modern Australian settings. Her own schemes travel well too: it’s easy to imagine the elegant neutrals that define her most recent magazine photoshoot working beautifully here in the Northern Hemisphere. Also worth knowing about, Phoebe’s antiques store The Vault is a treasure trove of inspirational forever pieces.

Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke put the decorative arts front and centre of their interior architecture and design work. These multiple award winners have been catching eyes for more than a decade with a soulful approach that emphasises quality, timelessness and a touch of the unusual. As recently as July, they earnt a photoshoot in the influential Belle magazine for their bold, inventive reimagining of a century-old family four-bed in Sydney’s inner west. That was just a couple of months after Belle also made Juliette and Sarah-Jane its interior designers of the year.

Tamsin Johnson has made her name with projects in New York, Paris and London, but she remains the Melbourne-born daughter of an antiques dealer at heart. Growing up surrounded by beautiful objects, she learnt that good pieces will always be good, and that comfort is key. Her work today embodies these life rules, creating a sense of luxurious ease across residential and commercial properties. Look out, in particular, for a couple of recent inner-city Sydney projects, entitled Palazzo and Oasis.

Alexander & Co are adamant – and we believe them – that exceptional design changes the world around us. They practise what they preach in some remarkable interiors projects that span Bondi Beach penthouses to the studio’s own HQ. Cafés, bars and restaurants feature heavily too, filling followers with ideas for how to create timelessly warm spaces of their own. A recent overhaul of a small Sydney interiors store has been turning heads with the way it transforms potentially dull home hardware displays into something rather beautiful.

Leah and Fliss have been working together for more than a decade. Their design and styling studio Bone Made is younger than that, but it’s already a fine showcase for laid-back approach to interiors projects. Their recent residential work has caught our eye: picture waterfront properties in the Sydney ’burbs inspired by French brasseries, contemporary updates for ‘Federation’ period family homes, and a Californian makeover for a listed bungalow. Proof, if it’s needed, that inspiration can come from anywhere.
