My style is best described as timeless, colourful and comfortable. I’ve never been fussed for trends, so timeless pieces tend to be at the core of many of my outfits – with a splash of colour or print to keep it fun. I love to play with prints and textures during the summer, sometimes clashing or paired with my favourite shorts and sandals; in the winter I lean much more towards minimalism, but I’ll always bring out a bit of colour if I’ve seen too many grey days.
Comfort should always be a top priority. It’s the one piece of style advice I wish I could share with everyone. It’s so important to see how you feel in an outfit – you want to wear the clothes and not have the clothes wear you, it’s the key to feeling your most confident. I personally feel most relaxed when I’m happy in what I’m wearing, plus I try to walk as much as possible when I’m in the city, so it makes sense to choose something practical.
Start with your shoes and work your way up. It depends on where I am and the season we’re in, but the way I get dressed is usually based on my footwear. This summer, my go-to formula has been a pair of sandals, a matching set or high-waisted shorts with a shirt and basket bag. You really can’t go wrong.
Don’t let trends dictate your style. I appreciate and follow trends to a degree, but they don’t determine how I dress. As I’ve got older, I’ve found buying timeless pieces that I love is preferable to anything too ‘of the moment’, as I don’t like the idea of having a time limit on my wardrobe. I try to focus on the ‘forever’ pieces and buying less, but buying better. Some of my favourite brands include La Veste – I love their shirts and the mix of prints and colours on offer; Ciao Lucia for holiday pieces; Romualda for the most incredible hats; Dolce & Gabbana for their matching sets; Chanel for timeless shoes and Loewe for their bags. There are countless others that I could name, too!
The ‘buy less, buy better’ philosophy really resonates with me. Before I buy anything, I always think about ‘our journey together’ – it sounds far too deep, but I’m not sure how else to phrase it! What I mean by it is buying something for ‘always’ rather than just for ‘now’. It’s fine to take a break, put something away for a few months or years and re-connect when the time is right – maybe you’ll even wear it differently. But think about whether you’ll really love it years down the line.
The five pieces every woman should have in her summer wardrobe are: a pair of tan sandals as they’ll go with everything (K. Jacques do some of the best), a relaxed boyfriend shirt (try menswear brand Hartford) as they’re perfect for throwing over swimwear or half tucking into a pair of high-waisted shorts. A fun little dress that’s easy to style both day and night (try Ciao Lucia, Rouje, SIR and Faithfull), a basket bag big enough for all your essentials and finally, some statement gold earrings to elevate your look. One of the things I love most about summer style is that it’s so effortless – less really is more, so don’t overthink it.
Don’t be afraid of prints. The best way to style them is to go all in – I love matching sets, as they’re a great way to make an impact, even if you’re running late and don’t have time to think about what to wear. If you’re new to it, then an easy way to incorporate prints and bright colours is by pairing them with classic pieces – that way you can ease into it while still staying true to yourself.
Always invest in great accessories. If you can, try to save and invest in bags, whether they’re new or pre-owned. If you treat them well, they can last a lifetime and they’re a great way to elevate even the simplest of outfits. There’s also something quite special about wearing a bag that belonged to your mother or grandmother – it’s lovely to be able to pass them on. I have a Loewe basket bag covered in embroidered flowers that I bought in Rome a few years ago, which has travelled everywhere with me and feels very special as I’ve never seen anyone else wearing it. Likewise, good jewellery can really make all the difference. The one piece I couldn’t live without is my Céline gold hoops – they really complete every outfit, even on casual days.
The secret to great style is staying true to yourself and wearing what makes you feel good. My style icon is Lauren Hutton, as she was always so chic yet still quirky and natural, and on Instagram, I love following @BlancaMiro as her style is so unique – they both inspire me to wear what makes me feel happy.
