With the invites starting to roll in thick and fast, it’s an exciting time of year, but it can also be a daunting one. The dread of not having anything to wear can cause a major headache. So, from work parties to dates with girlfriends and family functions, here’s how I approach every event…

01

Think About What You Already Own

Before I rush out and buy a new outfit, I look through my wardrobe to see if I can update an older party look by buying one or two specific things to elevate it. It might be an affordable bag or even just a hair accessory – you don’t always no need to shell out hundreds on an entirely new look. I have a stunning Free People mesh dress from last year that I can't wait to wear again. This year I'll be layering lots of jewellery and adding an oversized clutch to the look.

02

Plan Ahead

Most of my festive dates are firmly set in my diary ahead of time, so I try to plan what I want to wear for each event. I even moodboard my potential looks in Keynote so I have a constant reminder of my thought process – and don’t get distracted into making impulse purchases or panic buying things that won’t work for the dress code anyway.

03

Remember The Power Of Accessories

Whether it’s a statement necklace, dramatic earrings or the perfect clutch, the right finishing touch can reinvent a look in seconds. If in doubt, I will always let accessories do the heavy lifting on a minimalist look – that way you can wear the same dress or co-ord to multiple events. Switching up the accessories will ensure nothing feels repetitive.

04

Be Bold

The festive season can also be an opportunity to try something new or outside of my comfort zone. For those who are familiar with my style, it should come as no surprise that I quite enjoy dialling up the ‘extra’ when it comes to party looks. From short shorts to sheer skirts, embellishment to fringing, there’s no better time to go all out – so be brave if you want to. This year Self-Portrait has some excellent party pieces, as does H&M Studio. Mango's Capsule collection also has so many dresses that will not only work for party season but also some black-tie weddings I have in the diary for next year.

05

Don’t Abandon Your Personal Style

Party-season dressing doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your personal style for the sake of trends or tradition. Focus on pieces that reflect your aesthetic and elevating them with festive textures, thoughtful accessories or a bit of creativity. This way, you’ll feel comfortable, confident and put together at every event. Invest in pieces that will work beyond party season too – that’s the smart and responsible way to shop. I’m a firm believer that sequins aren’t just for Christmas.
