Designer Linda Farrow On Her Personal Style Rules
My personal style is best summed up by these three words: elegant, timeless, daring. I was deeply inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a perfect fusion of beauty and practicality. I wanted to do the same and revolutionise the eyewear industry, turning frames from functional accessories into practical fashion statements. This still influences our design ethos at Linda Farrow to this day, where my son, Simon Jablon, continues the business and designs statement but timeless eyewear that empowers people.
My wardrobe has strong foundations. I believe in a crisp white shirt, tailored trousers, vintage silk scarves and, of course, some oversized sunglasses – the perfect finishing touch to any outfit. These staples have been with me since the 70s and never lost their relevance.
Elegance often lies in restraint, not excess. For me, this means tailored clothes, high-quality fabrics, neutral tones and silhouettes that compliment your body and can be worn across seasons. I would also include well-crafted and quality accessories, such as sunglasses, shoes or a belt. A capsule wardrobe should be timeless and reflect your personality and who you are to the world. To create an effortless yet polished look, mix structure with softness, then anchor it with a standout accessory.
I believe in investing in the pieces you wear every day because those are the ones that truly need to stand the test of time. When cared for properly, well-crafted items can last a lifetime. Craftsmanship is worth every penny where it matters, whether it's a beautifully tailored garment, a leather handbag or a timeless watch. I've always admired designers who create beautiful pieces while still valuing the craftsmanship involved in making a garment – for example, Dries Van Noten, The Row and vintage Yves Saint Laurent and vintage Céline for quiet sophistication. I was very honoured when our brand collaborated with Dries Van Noten for some bold, sophisticated and timeless sunglasses.
I don’t often buy online, as I’m not very tech savvy. So, I always enjoy having a browse at vintage stores, and London has some amazing ones. Our office is close to Hatton Garden and that can be fun along with Grays in Mayfair or a browse along the Burlington Arcade. I try not to follow micro-trends too much as I like to be intentional when purchasing new items, but I occasionally refresh my wardrobe with essentials items in a new silhouette or colour.
I’ve always admired the fearlessness and iconic styles of Vivienne Westwood, Daphne Guinness, Diane von Furstenberg and Grace Jones. Art, architecture and travel have also fuelled my imagination but, often, I turn to our archive such as the 1970s collections I designed. It reminds me how much can be reinvented with the right lens. This year, we are bringing back one of my original iconic designs, reimagined with a fresh twist and crafted with modern cutting-edge design techniques. We’ve named the style ‘Lila’ after my granddaughter and it’s the perfect example of vintage designs being reimagined for the contemporary woman.
To elevate an outfit, I look for tension, a bit of drama, a striking silhouette or something unexpected. One sharp detail can lift an otherwise minimal look into something unforgettable. Accessories add the ultimate finishing touch – they brighten, define the tone of the outfit and can transform even the most understated look. Often too, they convey your personal style and personality to everyone else. A beautiful watch or a statement bag are also worth the investment, as they can make a powerful visual impact.
As a designer, mother and entrepreneur, I needed fashion to keep up with my ambition. My wardrobe needs to travel well, adapt easily and always feel luxurious. Comfort should never come at the cost of elegance. Being a mother has made me more attuned to practicality without compromising on beauty. I gravitate toward silhouettes I can move in, fabrics that feel soft and pieces that transition from morning to evening effortlessly.
Adapting my fashion choices for different occasions, from professional settings to casual outings, is about elegance and refinement. A high-quality shirt and tailored trousers are always great in professional settings, and you can transform them into a nighttime look with some pointed heels, some simple jewellery and a red lipstick.
Your clothes should define who you are. If you’re trying to define your personal style, start with something that you are comfortable wearing but still makes you feel empowered. To ensure your wardrobe remains cohesive and versatile, start by curating rather than collecting or impulse buying. I maintain similar colour palettes, high-quality fabric and clothing items that can be worn in different ways.
To achieve a relaxed yet sophisticated look, embrace undone elegance. Your clothes should be refined, your make-up should be minimal, and a pair of sunglasses will always keep the look polished and sophisticated without looking too perfect. Trends come and go – I like to interpret them through a timeless lens.
