The Background
Pearls have a rich history that, for a long time, was only associated with royalty and high society. Then Coco Chanel and Paul Poiret invented the faux pearl, which became an accessible fashion accessory for everyday wear. A mainstay throughout the 1920s and 1930s, by the time the 1980s and 1990s rolled round, pearls were once again the ultimate symbol of elegance and sophistication.
The 2023 Comeback
This season, pearls have been given the fashion-girl stamp of approval. Once considered a bit twee, they are enjoying a renaissance, with an array of contemporary designers bringing them back for SS23. No longer confined to jewellery and accessories, they’ve been used to embellish and elevate overcoats, blazers, knitwear and denim. After they were seen on the runways at Simone Rocha and Chanel, it’s no surprise the high street has followed suit, with Zara leading the way with trimmed tops and oversized pearl accessories.

How To Wear It Now
It’s a case of more is more when it comes to this trend. Go super oversized and look for embellished straps and necklines. Meanwhile, a flurry of cult contemporary brands like Pearl Octopussy and Completed Works are making cool, instantly recognisable pearl accessories. We love the twisted wired beads with statement pearl detail that can be worn around a blazer at the cuffs or on the ankle of loose trousers. Style up embellished shirts and blazers with leather and silk staples for evening looks with added drama.
