A Stylist Shares Her Fashion Dos & Don’ts

DO Rely On Elevated Classics
The transitional period can be tricky to navigate, but one of my go-to outfits is well-fitted denim and a great cashmere crewneck. Finding the perfect one is tough, but my all-time favourites are from Khaite – I’ve got them in black and grey, and cherish them dearly. You could add a pair of ballet flats or some cool western boots from Totême. Just keep it simple – you want to wear the clothes, not the other way around.
DO Think About Styles Not Trends
Always go back to who you are and what you like. The best way to do this is to create a folder on your phone or Pinterest with inspirational looks, people and pieces that get you excited. Make sure you have those classics in your closet you always can rely on because, while newness is exciting, it’s not that important. Consistency and style is so much more interesting. Also consider clearing your closet regularly (by donating and selling) and keeping things organised. I tend to sort things by colour and style, so I have a good overview of what I have.
DON’T Forget To Accessorise
Cool sunglasses, a belt or earrings can take a basic outfit to new heights. Make sure your everyday jewellery pieces add something to your look, and consider the look as a whole rather than only thinking about the clothing pieces. For example, I always keep in mind what coat I am going to wear as I decide what to put on each morning – it’s about the full look.

DO Invest In Good Outerwear
I managed to score an oversized Saint Laurent black wool coat in a Black Friday sale recently. It’s from the AW22 collection and I’d actually spotted it on the runway and put it on my wish list. I love statement pieces like this to give looks a cooler edge. My black shearling coat from By Malene Birger is another favourite for something chic, comfortable and warm. Double-breasted coats from Totême also have my heart – I have them in black and dark grey, and love pairing them with a matching scarf.
DO Find Your Perfect Fit
As I’m tall, I don’t like it when clothes look too small or cropped, so I often size up. I recommend doing the same, then tailoring pieces later to get the perfect fit. If you’re going for that oversized look however, it’s all about balance. For example, I’d pair an oversized coat with something tighter underneath. The same applies to footwear – as a size 41, I’ll never wear anything clunky and know that feminine and sleek looking pieces work best for me. It’s all about proportions.
DO Have Pieces You Can Style For Any Occasion
When I either don’t know what to wear or just need something to throw on and go, a black crewneck from The Row is my go-to. It's chic as knitwear during the day, but I’ll also style things up for the evening with tailored black trousers or jeans and a slingback.
DON'T Make Your Capsule Wardrobe Boring
While staples are important, switching up the shape and fit can make even the most boring of pieces feel more elevated. A white shirt is the perfect example of this. Stick to your style and add flair – whether it's a cool collar or exaggerated cuff. Also remember that a capsule wardrobe will be completely different from person to person, so be sure to define the heroes that work for you.
DO Buy Less, But Better
Invest in a less-is-more philosophy. It’s always better to have a few kick-ass pieces rather than tons of subpar ones you never really wear. This approach doesn't have to cost the earth – just look to a brand like COS which does affordable luxury so well.
DO Take Care Of Your Knitwear
Choose wool or cashmere and keep them fresh using a good steamer and clothing brushes. I buy mine from The Steamery.
DO Create Outfit Formulas To Go Back To
This is especially handy in this transitional period, when it can be tough to know what to wear in the evenings. I usually opt for either a long black skirt – my favourites are from Saint Laurent or House of Dagmar – plus a crisp tucked-in white tee from either COS or The Row. Add a pair of slingbacks and a black bouclé jacket to complete the look.
