Rotate’s Co-Founder Shares Her Party Style Dos & Don'ts

Rotate founder Jeanette Madsen is known for her impeccable Scandi taste and exacting eye – so who better to point us in the right direction this party season? From ways to embrace maximalism to the trends worth investing in, here are her party style dos and don’ts…

DO Mix & Match…

Never say never – especially when it comes to having fun with fashion. You’ll be surprised how simple it is to master something like clashing fabrics and colours. Start by focusing on your silhouette and what suits your body – it’ll make any look feel more put-together. For example, if you go for an oversized pink top with fun exaggerated shoulders, don’t be shy to pair them with metallic trousers or something bold. Just opt for a slimmer-fit trouser to keep things in balance.

DO Add Mega Accessories…

A fun bag and statement earrings promise to transform any evening look with ease. It’s definitely my trick to take a simple LBD or suit to the next level. Interestingly, the first time Thora and I wore our brand Rotate Sunday during Copenhagen Fashion Week, we actually went incredibly relaxed – but a great pair of heels added that glamorous touch.

NEVER SAY NEVER – especially when it comes to having fun with fashion. You’ll be surprised how simple it is to master something like CLASHING COLOURS AND FABRICS.

DO Invest In Sequins…

Although there are several trends that stand out this season – from feathers to embellished details and vibrant shades – sequins truly bring out the party spirit. I’ve personally added a beautiful sequin pencil skirt to my own wardrobe, and depending on my mood and the occasion, I’ll style it up and down long beyond party season. A black strapless top, an oversized blazer, a pair of PVC shoes and a little bag (very 90s) would be my preference. Alternatively, a cosy knit can tone things down nicely.

DON’T Underestimate The Power Of An LBD…

If a party or an event pops up at the last minute, my advice is go for an all-black look. Something short and sexy is a no-brainer, while an oversized blazer from The Frankie Shop and pumps from Neous are all you need to complete the look. If you’re after a more modest take, a sleek turtleneck maxi dress is perfect when teamed with fun accessories.

DO Consider Trousers & Jumpsuits For A Chic Alternative To A Dress…

If dresses aren’t for you, fear not because party trousers are everywhere this year. A pair of black PVC leggings is always a safe bet, or go for silver PU trousers to play into the metallic trend. Team these with a simple top, like the Khaite ‘Audra’ or a turtleneck. Add a bag in the same colour as your top, and throw on an open sandal to break things up. Alternatively, a great jumpsuit is so reliable if you’re in the middle of a clothing crisis. I’d recommend this YSL Strapless Catsuit or our Frilled Jersey Jumpsuit.

DO Give Pink A Chance…

Pink is always a good idea and minimalists will rejoice that this doesn't just mean flamboyant fuchsia or going full ‘Barbiecore’. This season, I’m embracing a more muted pink, mixed with black for a cool contrast. A tonal look is also a go-to move when it comes to styling colour. It makes the look more simple, sophisticated and considered – especially if you play around with the fabrics or textures.

DO Style-Up Your Suits…

Although an LBD is a classic, you can’t go wrong with an oversized suit either. For a sexy and feminine take, try wearing a lingerie-inspired bodysuit underneath to contrast the masculine proportions. Pair this with a pointed heel that can subtly poke through the long trousers.

DO Prioritise Comfort…

Confidence is, a lot of the time, tied to comfort – so do think about what makes you feel your best. If you’re ever unsure, it’s best to go for what you would normally wear, but spice it up with jewellery and heels for a festive touch. A fool-proof look if you’re stuck is to team simple trousers with a fun, festive top. Sets are also a great option as they’re easy to throw on and effortless to style yet make a real impact. Our purple sequined set for example would look great with our cropped faux fur coat in the same colour.

If dresses aren’t for you, fear not because PARTY TROUSERS ARE EVERYWHERE THIS YEAR. A pair of black PVC leggings is always a safe bet, or go for silver PU trousers to play into the metallic trend.

DON’T Forget About These Great Brands…

It goes without saying that Rotate is a winner for party dressing, but there are some other brands doing great things too. Magda Butrym always nails the most perfect silhouettes with that perfect mix of feminine and casual. A personal favourite of mine is YSL – no one masters sexy glamour like Anthony Vaccarello. Coperni is also beyond brilliant at coming up with unique, alternative options for someone keen to dress outside the box – the Crossover Flower Mini Dress is such a standout. Finally, I find Miu Miu is fun, youthful and incredibly wearable. Its current collection feels so right this party season. If you’re on a budget, Zara does a great job with fun party dresses.

DON’T Let The Cold Dictate Your Look…

If you’re wearing a minidress and it’s freezing, throw on a practical floor length coat to add some drama. Our Black & White Fur Coat from Rotate or alternatively, a short fluffy faux-fur piece will look amazing with tight trousers – but you can’t go wrong with a pair of tights under your dress or with a pair of pointy heels.

DO Think About Your Shoes…

You’ll never see me wear short boots and a minidress  – it only makes me appear shorter. Instead, my goal is to accentuate and elongate, which is why I prefer sling-backs. When it comes to longer dresses, I’ll often go for something strappy with an ankle band. It’s all about understanding what suits your proportions and the length of the pieces you’re wearing.

DO Shop Both Vintage & New…

I love a vintage evening bag to switch up a classic look. A few I’ve been using frequently are a black Chanel vintage shell bag and a little clutch I inherited from my mother-in-law. I’ve also invested in some great new pieces, too – for example Prada’s new Triangle style. Others I love are the classic Paco Rabanne chainmail bag and a little Alaïa heart. In my party bag, you’ll find my phone and keys, and if I’m very organised, a lip balm and some extra Hollywood tape in case of any wardrobe malfunctions.

DO Take Inspiration From Others…

At the moment, there are a couple of people on Instagram nailing party style. @HannaMW is great at putting together classic but cool outfits, while @EmiliSindlev is your go-to for lots of colour.
