The Designer
Miuccia Prada – who is also co-CEO of Prada – created Miu Miu back in 1993. After finding success at a young age working for Prada, which was then an accessories house, she launched Miu Miu as a secondary line reflective of her own wardrobe. ‘Miu Miu’ is her nickname and its first collection had a western edge: picture fringed jackets and prairie skirts. Just last summer it was the brand that sent the mini skirt viral. Now with both menswear and eyewear in its range, Miu Miu continues to tap into the same spirit as Prada, but with a core aesthetic that feels younger and freer.
The Shows
The Italian fashion house has always been an It girl’s dream. Back in 1996, Chloë Sevigny opened its SS show which gained high praise from fashion insiders by playing into the ‘ugly chic’ trend for 70s staples. Another landmark show was SS10 when the brand went feminine, but still with that Miu Miu edge, featuring floral prints, Mary-Janes, mini silhouettes and exaggerated collars. For AW12, Miu Miu surprised the fashion world with a collection geared towards tailoring – that same craftsmanship still shines through in its suiting and outerwear today. Then, in 2021, its post-pandemic show revealed the Miu Miu mini and its ultra-cropped knits and shirts.
The Trends
Those directional pieces are the ones that go viral, but Miu Miu also has some grown-up heroes like its brown and white leather slingback pumps. Like a penny loafer with a high-fashion twist, it’s been making the rounds for years in both vintage and reimagined forms. Miu Miu also helped spark the comeback of ballet flats – its silk-finish version with characteristic strap pair beautifully with tailored trousers, jeans, skirts and dresses alike. Meanwhile, its Wander Matelassé Leather Mini Hobo bag has been seen on celebs and insiders from Kendall Jenner to Chiara Ferragni.
The Aesthetic
The Miu Miu look today is all about femininity with a bit of edge. This year’s AW runways showcased wearable staples like maxi wrap coats – timeless and perfect for the season ahead, you can find similar pieces at a range of price points on the high street. Pointed slingbacks remain an integral part of the look, as is an oversized suede or leather jacket with shearling details. The high street also has some well-matched alternatives to a classic Miu Miu Matelassé bag.
