An A-List Stylist Shares Her Fashion Dos & Don’ts

As a celebrity stylist whose clients include Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Genevieve O’Reilly, it’s safe to say Frederica Lovell-Pank knows a thing or two about good style. Having also worked legendary photographers David Sims and Solve Sundsbo, and brands like Cartier and Moda Operandi, we asked her to share the main dos and don’ts she’s picked up during the course of her career…

DON’T Follow Trends

As much as we’d all love to look like Kendall Jenner popping out in her knickers and tights, most trends aren’t right for everyone. Let trends come and go – instead, spend the time building a wardrobe full of pieces you love and feel good in. Think of them as the foundations from which you build different outfits  again and again.

DO Find A Good Tailor

I rarely do any job without using Karen Avenell and her team. A couple of tweaks in the right places can make all the difference. There’s also nothing chicer than a well-tailored suit. When it comes to brands, Bella Freud, Galvan and The Deck do great tailoring.

Let trends come and go – instead, SPEND THE TIME BUILDING A WARDROBE FULL OF PIECES YOU LOVE and feel good in.

DON’T Be Afraid Of Accessories

A look can be turned around with the right accessories – think layered necklaces, big earrings or a great pair of shoes. As Vivienne Westwood once said, “When in doubt, overdress.” When dressing clients, I usually look to brands like Messika, Anita Ko and Begüm Khan for statement pieces. Cocktail rings from Louise Sinclair and Minka jewels if the occasion is steering you that way. For beautiful bespoke pieces, I go to Hannah Warner.

DO Shop Responsibly

Buy second-hand where you can. There are so many great online retailers specialising in vintage clothing, one-off key pieces and second-hand gems these days. Reluxe ticks all these boxes for me and is well-priced. Invest in key staples – whether it be a classic bag, good quality denim or a tailored jacket – as these will stand the test of time and can be restyled numerous ways.

DON’T Suffer In Heels

Avoid scary and hard-to-walk in stilettos. Instead, go a little lower or opt for a block heel. Platforms are also a happy medium – Aquazzura is a brand I come back to time and time again.

As Vivienne Westwood once said, “WHEN IN DOUBT, OVERDRESS.”

DO Invest In The Right Underwear

Taking time to find underwear that fits is so important for your overall look. If you want help, then most department stores like Marks & Spencer offer a free fitting service. Whether it’s a seamless pair of knickers, sculpting underwear or a more supportive bra, these sorts of pieces will help you feel your best. As well as M&S, Love Stories and Fleur Du Mal, Commando is great for seamless and sculpting styles.
