How It Started

The 90s were all about the sports brands – think Princess Di in her oversized crewneck sweatshirt, cycling shorts and chunky trainers. Athleticwear became a notable trend in the early 90s and technical sportswear brands spilled into streetwear, making it a cult – and now revisited – trend. Adidas, Reebok and Converse were all major players, and by the mid-90s the runways were mixing sportswear trends with high fashion.

The cricket jumper is the perfect mix of PREPPY AND COOL. An oversized fit, low V-neck and a thick chunky knit are key to getting it spot on this season.

How It's Going….

This year Lacoste celebrated 90 years of its iconic crocodile logo and cult brand status, so it’s no surprise an array of brands with legitimate sports heritage are riding on the 90s-throwback wave and bringing back their classic styles of athleticwear. With colour panelling, stripes and retro logos, labels like Sporty & Rich and The Upside make it easy to achieve the 90s health club meets preppy aesthetic. Recent collaborations see contemporary trends fused with old-school classics – think new colourways of classic trainers, super-oversized retro sweatshirts and fresh incarnations of cult pieces.

How We’re Wearing It Now….

This season, layer chunky cricket jumpers over polo necks and shirts and style with loose denim and caps. The PE-style pleated mini is also having a bit of a moment – wear with a chunky knit, boots and socks for a retro sportswear vibe. Remember to size up your sporty sweatshirt and pair with loose leather trousers and wide-leg denim for a new-season twist.
