Would You Wear 2018's Biggest Sunglasses Trend?

From dad trainers to market bags, 2018 has already thrown up some questionable trends. And sunglasses are the latest accessory to undergo a quirky transformation. Forget the oversized bug styles of yore – this summer, tiny, Matrix-like designs are the cool way to shade your eyes…

It’s not unusual for trends to do a 180. In the past year or so, we’ve seen skinny jeans replaced with baggy boyfriends, slim fit blazers subbed for throwback shoulder pads and double breasting and towering stilettos cast aside in favour of kitten heels and slingbacks. Whether you like these looks or not, there’s no denying their capacity to flatter – from waist-cinching denim to proportion-balancing suiting, you can see why this season’s key trends have mass appeal.

The big exception to the rule? Ultra-slim, futuristic style sunglasses, as seen at Illesteva, Le Specs and cult new label Andy Wolf. Like much of today’s fashion, Balenciaga is the guilty catalyst, but it’s unusual for their runway looks not to be adapted for more ‘normal’ fashion consumers – unlike dagger-sharp heels and deconstructed denim jackets, the brand’s super skinny sunnies have trickled down to the high street and other big-name brands in their purest form.

The big question is, why? They’re not flattering, practical or particularly cheap. Typically, trends that don’t tick any of these boxes are dumped on the ‘runway only’ pile. But this is one with apparent staying power, with fashion influencers, top models and Instagram’s coolest already stocking up. Grant Krajeki, designer for cult sunglasses label Grey Ant claims it's down to nostalgia.

'The skinny “millennium “ frame falls into the idea of 'let’s wear what we wore as kids'. It's one of many trends that have come around full circle for millennials.'

Perhaps like much of today's coolest trends, the look is a hark back to more experimental, street-inspired fashion times. Like what you see? Our advice is to strike now - we predict it won't be around for long.
