My Life In Travel: Amanda Teale
Where was the last place you travelled to and where did you stay? Talk us through the holiday highlights…
I’ve just come back from Ibiza, where I stayed at 7Pines with my two sisters and best friend – we go every year, and it always has the loveliest vibe. It’s relaxed and chic without the full-on party madness, and the sea views from the hotel are sensational. We do keep the trip balanced and, as per tradition, we headed straight to Ushuaïa for Calvin Harris on the Friday – it’s a sure fire way to click into holiday mode. One of the best days always is taking a boat across to Formentera, where we had lunch at Beso Beach – it’s the perfect balance of lively and laidback and I had the best paella of my life (as I always do there). In San Antonio, I always pop into my favourite boutique, Ibiza Secrets. The owner is wonderful and the quality of the clothes is amazing.
Where is the most memorable place you’ve been to?
Africa, more specifically anywhere in Africa where you can be close to the animals. Royal Malewane in South Africa, Arijiju in Kenya and Leobo in the Waterberg all stand out. I’ve never seen views like that anywhere else in the world and it’s such an earthing, humbling experience. I love travelling to Africa for the wildlife and landscapes, as well as Thailand for its beautiful people and calm, and the US for variety. I spend a lot of time in Florida and am lucky enough to own a home there which I bought during Covid. The south of France is also a forever favourite, I never tire of it.
Where are your favourite hotels abroad?
Soneva Kiri in Thailand is pure magic. With untouched jungle on one side and the clearest turquoise water on the other, it feels like you’ve stepped into a dream. You arrive by private plane, so even the journey feels special, and once you’re there, time just seems to slow down. The villas are tucked into the hillside, each with its own infinity pool looking out to the ocean. There’s an outdoor cinema under the stars, treetop dining pods hoisted high into the canopy and the kind of stillness you rarely find anywhere else in the world. It’s the place to go to in your mind when you need to escape; completely serene yet full of those little ‘I can’t believe I’m here’ moments. I also have to mention the Indonesian archipelago Raja Ampat, on board the luxury sailing yacht Lamima, which words cannot describe – it’s literally like the lost world, with not a soul in sight.
Where are your favourite hotels in the UK?
Three Mile Beach in Cornwall will always be special for me – it’s located in Gwithian, which was voted the best beach in the UK by The Times in 2024. My reasons for visits run much deeper though. My grandparents are Cornish, and my grandfather proposed to my grandmother overlooking Godrevy Lighthouse and my great grandfather built one of the first chalets on Gwithian Towans beach. My parents used to have a house there, too, so I grew up going regularly and still visit every year with the whole family. Honourable mentions to The Newt and Four Seasons Hampshire, both of which are stunning country hotels.
Where do you go for a city break?
New York is my ultimate city break – there’s nowhere like it and I don’t think anyone could argue with that. I also think Edinburgh in the winter is magical. That’s when the city comes into its own and it’s got such a special atmosphere about it with the festive lights, snow (if you’re lucky) and overtly dramatic architecture. I really enjoy the train journey from London, too.
Favourite place for a beach holiday?
Cornwall. I can’t speak highly enough about Gwithian, if you couldn’t tell, and it will always have my heart. Elsewhere, and in an attempt to protect the anonymity of Gwithian, the Maldives is an undeniable heaven for swimming, as are the beaches in Turks & Caicos and Florida. Anywhere I can swim in the Atlantic Ocean will top the list of best beaches in my opinion – come summer or winter, it’s just wonderful.
Have you ever been on a great road trip?
So many! I’ve done countless road trips in France, including the Alps for skiing and the south for summer. I’ve also lost count of the drives to Cornwall, but I’m sure that doesn’t come as a surprise by now! In the US, California road trips are unbeatable – from the Santa Monica Hills to the Pacific Coast Highway, Vegas, Death Valley and Monument Valley, long stretches of open road aren’t done better anywhere else.
Where is the most romantic place you’ve ever been to?
Anywhere in the south of France has a natural romance to it, but Saint-Paul-de-Vence is particularly special. It’s a medieval hilltop village with cobbled streets, ivy-covered buildings and views that stretch all the way to the sea. You can spend hours wandering past little art galleries, stopping for a glass of chilled rosé in a tiny square, or having dinner on a terrace where the air is scented with jasmine. There’s an old-world glamour to it and it’s the kind of place where you half expect to see Picasso or Yves Montand stroll past. At sunset, when the golden light hits the stone walls, it’s pure perfection.
If you were getting married tomorrow, where would you go on your honeymoon?
Paris to start, The Penthouse at Four Seasons George V, then the Venice Simplon Orient Express to Cannes to stay at the Four Seasons Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat. From there, get me straight on a private jet to Naples and a heli to Capri to stay at La Scalinatella, where they infuse their white wine with peaches – I cannot express how incredible that tastes. The hotel only serves lunch but that’s fine because I could survive on that wine day and night. Pure magic, pure Italian hospitality and views to die for.
If you had just two nights abroad, where would you go?
The south of France around Nice, Saint-Tropez or anywhere in Provence. There’s something about the light, the pace and the atmosphere that feels special, even for a short stay.
Have you had any memorable meals on holiday?
Too many to choose from, but the paella at Beso Beach in Formentera is hands-down the best I’ve ever eaten. Another meal that stands out was at the Martinez Hotel in Cannes – it was just a simple salad, but the dressing was so incredible I still think about it.
If you had to live in a hotel, which one would you choose?
The Four Seasons Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat. Easy!
Where were your favourite holiday pictures taken?
Gwithian in Cornwall and on the beaches of Florida. Both places that feel like home.
What are your holiday packing essentials and what swimwear do you always pack for a holiday?
My phone, always. Heidi Klein swimwear. I love that you can mix and match sizes, what more could a woman want. On the not-so-sexy stuff, a good insect repellent will be your saving grace even when you think you don’t need it.
Do you have any travel plans coming up?
Chicago for work, then down to Florida for two weeks to sort out some life admin and then off to Bali for the Four Seasons Preferred Partner Conference at Jimbaran Bay.
What places are on your bucket list?
Antarctica, it feels like the last great frontier, need I say more?
