My Life In Beauty With Kristin Davis
Of your three Sex and the City cast mates, whose make-up bag would you steal and why?
“If I had to pick one, I’d say Sarah Jessica Parker’s. We share a minimalist view of life and make-up, and she is also really choosy about her skincare. I have to be so careful with what I put on my skin, based on years of using all kinds of crazy, harsh things and learning the hard way that was not what I needed to do.
“I used to have rosacea, which I developed from using so much make-up – obviously, in our job, we’re using different make-up all the time. In my 30s, there were a lot of harsh acid products we were told we needed to use, and I ended up getting a bad reaction to them, with red and bumpy patches. It was a real problem at work, of course, but also in everyday life – because my skin was so red, I didn't want to leave the house! That’s when I got the CC in a gift bag, the original It Cosmetic CC Cream – I used it and it was amazing because it didn't irritate my skin and it covered the redness.”
Is there anything beauty wise that Charlotte would do, that you would or wouldn't do?
“Charlotte likes to look classic and I like that too, but I would never wear eyeshadow regularly in my day-to-day life like she does. I think Charlotte's more together than I am! On the one hand, she’s the ultimate Upper East Side lady but I don't feel she's an Upper East Side lady in a clichéd sense – she’s not doing her face and hair all the time. Charlotte has her look and she's not trying to change it. She’s just trying to stay together and that's why she dresses the way she dresses and why her hair is never going to change.”
Your hair still looks as amazing as it did in Melrose Place all those years ago (1995). What is your secret?
“Ah, thank you! I think a lot of it is genetics, but I have had times where my hair has struggled – mainly in the workplace when the job is really taking its toll. I've learned over time that I need to be doing the things in life that give my hair and my skin a break when I'm not working, or on the weekends when I am working.”
When you're not filming, what's your downtime beauty routine?
“Well, it's very minimal because I have no time with a house full of kids! In the mornings, I run upstairs and I've got about five minutes. I have a toner hydrating spray and I might use a moisturiser if it's really dry in LA (where I live), then I finish with IT Cosmetics CC+ and Nude Glow – it's got sunscreen in it and it gives a little bit of coverage too. I don't want to look made up, but I also don't want to look like I didn't make any effort, so I might put on some concealer, maybe some blush if I have time, and that's it. I want that happy medium, so that I can go through the day not looking like I just rolled out of bed, whether we go to a restaurant, the park or a basketball game.”
How has your beauty routine changed as you’ve got older?
“A beauty theory that I'm very committed to now I'm older is ‘less is more’ – in all things. I love multi-functional products that tick all the boxes. I want my skin to be healthy under whatever I’m putting on it and my hair to be healthy too; I don't want to do anything that's going to harm either one so ‘do no harm’ is a good motto too. There's a certain amount of wear and tear that's going to happen to your skin and your hair in life, so you've just got give them good ingredients and be healthy when you can.”
What's your approach to ageing – have you got a strategy?
“We have a lot of choices now in terms of what you want to do or not do. Sometimes it's really exciting to feel like you can do things, but the health of your skin is of paramount importance. That means not hurting your skin, not using super harsh products and not doing harsh treatments. I don't want to make anyone feel bad, but we all see the different posts about things people are doing and I'm scared. I have messed my skin up every which way there is to mess it up so, at this point, I just want to keep my skin healthy and I don't want to mess up the barrier. When I had rosacea in my youth, I think it was due to the many harsh acids I used and I think they messed up my skin barrier. Now I'm focussing on protecting what I still have – protecting my collagen, protecting my elastin, just really respecting my skin.”
What beauty advice are you passing on to your daughter?
“Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! In my teens, it was not something I ever knew or thought about at all. I was using Hawaiian Tropic – we’d go to the beach and cover ourselves in oil. It was crazy. Because my daughter is athletic and outdoors a lot, I really focus on sunscreen and how important it is.”
Are there any items you never leave home without?
“It’s got to be sunscreen – I mean, you know, because I live in LA, right? I turn brown so easily, not in a great way but a splotchy way, so I carry it with me all the time. I feel that protection is so important at this point and, if I were stuck on a desert island, I would really want my IT Cosmetics CC+ and Nude Glow because I wouldn't want to be like parchment paper when I got off that island!”
