My Life In Beauty With Helen Mirren

British acting legend Dame Helen Mirren has spent decades dazzling audiences with her extraordinary talent, commanding presence and fearless approach to every role she takes on. Beyond her acting career, she has become a global icon of ageless beauty and unapologetic self-expression. For Helen, now 80, beauty isn’t about chasing youth but about embracing individuality, confidence and joy at every stage of life. We sat down with the Oscar-winning actress and L'Oréal Paris Ambassador backstage at the beauty brand's Le Défilé show to reflect on her evolving relationship with beauty, from her bold red-carpet moments to the rituals and philosophies that keep her grounded and looking radiant.

The Le Défilé message of 'walking your worth' is such an important one, but some women might find it difficult to find that self-confidence. Was there a turning point or an age in your life when you discovered your own self-worth?

Yes, probably in my late fifties, which is actually a very difficult time for women. One of the issues a lot of women talk about through their fifties is that they feel they've become invisible and, funnily enough, one of the very first ads I did for L'Oréal Paris was dealing with that exact issue – how to stop feeling invisible.

It’s an era when you have to let go of some things from your past – things like youth and beauty, a certain kind of energy and a certain kind of ambition in your career. By the time you're in your mid-fifties, all of that is settled into something and you have to recognise that; then you have to understand that you can go on from there, and that there are interesting and exciting times ahead.

I've ALWAYS LOVED MAKE-UP and what it can do either to CREATE A CHARACTER or just to make you LOOK BETTER.

You’re currently backstage at the L'Oréal show as part of Paris Fashion Week. What’s the atmosphere like?

Well, it's very hard work backstage! It’s that classic fashion thing. I mean, it's so exciting, I have to say. People are running backwards and forwards, and clothes are being taken out and delivered, something’s too long, too short! And the jewellery and the hair and the make-up… It’s absolutely wonderful, wonderful chaos. There is no time, quite honestly, for fun. There's no sitting around with glasses of champagne or anything like that – how disappointing!

As a model, I do have a little bit of input, and I often have an idea of how I want to look. Sometimes I want to look very extreme and, at other times, I'd like to look quite natural, but I never put my foot down and say, I must have this! That's not my style, ever, because I always think other people may have better ideas.

As an actor, you are used to long stints in the make-up chair. When you’re at home, what’s your regime?

I've always loved make-up and what it can do either to create a character or just to make you look better. I can spend an hour and a half in front of the mirror fiddling around with my make-up because I love the process.

During Covid, when it was just me and my husband at home, I applied make-up every day. He never notices whether I've got any make-up on or not, he’s not that sort of bloke, so I certainly wasn't doing it for him; it was just so if I happened to catch sight of myself in a mirror, I'd think, oh, I look okay. I feel so sorry for men not being able to wear make-up!

I have quick make-up and, sometimes, my quick make-up looks so much better than my slow make-up. You know how a five-minute make-up can look great, and then an hour and a half make-up can look awful? I love the L’Oréal Paris True Match Nude Plumping Tinted Serum – it's a fabulous foundation and makes your skin look sort of nude, and it goes on so easily. It's great. Plus, a bit of mascara, a bit of eye shadow and, of course, lipstick. If you don't have all of those, it’s got to be red lipstick and dark glasses. Red lipstick is always a winner. And I never leave home without the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Clinical SPF50+ Invisible UV Fluid – I’ve got it in my bag as we speak. It is a great moisturising sunblock.

Of all the characters you've played, are there any you identify with more than others?

I don't identify with any particular role, quite honestly, but at the same time, every role you play has a different part of you in it. I loved playing Elizabeth I. Historically, she was such an extraordinary person and, miraculously, her speeches still exist as she spoke them. I do love a costume drama, so I just adored those elaborate costumes. I love wearing them and I love watching them.

Talking of costumes, what are you wearing for the show tomorrow?

Oh, I'm wearing a very extreme and rather strange outfit. I look a bit like an alien or a sort of spaceman, you know? It's quite out there what I'm wearing!
