11 Crime Podcasts To Listen To

If you’re partial to a true crime series on TV or a classic whodunnit novel, it’s time to branch out into crime podcasts. Six years after the first season of Serial had listeners around the world hooked, we’re now enjoying a golden age of the genre, with new series launching every week both here and across the pond. Here’s our pick of the best crime podcasts currently available to binge-listen to now…

Serial

It was 1999 in Baltimore County, Maryland, when a high-school senior named Hae Min Lee disappeared one day after school. A month later, her body was found in a city park. She'd been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime and, within a year, he was sentenced to life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae's body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t. Sarah Koenig thought there was more to it, so sifted through thousands of documents, listened to trial testimonies and police interrogations, and talked to everyone she could find who remembered what happened between Adnan and Hae. In this podcast, Sarah Koenig looks for answers.

Episode Highlight: Leakin Park
Hae’s been missing for three weeks when a man who stops at the side of road stumbles on her body in a city forest. But when you hear about the man’s suspicious behaviour – why was he walking in the woods in the middle of the day – the case suddenly becomes even more complicated.

West Cork

In 1996 French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found dead near her holiday home in West Cork. With no witnesses and no known motive, it was known simply as ‘the murder’. The police had a suspect in the community, but they couldn’t make a charge stick. A quarter of a century later, this podcast series brings together a remarkable cast of characters, many of whom have never spoken publicly before. The victim’s family, the aforementioned suspect and other locals are all on hand to share their side of the story.

Episode Highlight: Five
Five episodes in, the guards finally have a suspect – one who has spent the last 20 years trying to convince Ireland that he is not a murderer. This episode traces back his steps over the six weeks following the murder, up until the day of his arrest. What was he up to, and how did he become the central figure in one of Ireland’s most notorious murder cases?
